Default Stock Mass Air Flow Sensor

Is the stock mass air flow sensor on a 2004 Z06 susposed to have a screen on it?
My car is at the dealer for a A/C problem, the service manager says the tech. noticed a code in the ecm.
He says the tech. check into it and found that someone removed the screen.
I told him that the car runs pefect and I have never had any warning lights on the dash.
I have had the car for 6 weeks and put over 1400 miles on it. You would think if there was a problem the engine light would have come on.
Also I pulled codes before I took it in today to make sure the HVAC codes were still there. They were the only ones shown.
The service manager said that the Tech 2 scaner can pull codes that the dashboard display cant.
Thanks

I believe GM removed the screen for the Z06 in 2002 along with the more efficient air box. They kept the screen in the C5 though.

I would say the dealer is full of it on several accounts. A. the '04 Z has not MAF screen. B. Any alterations to the MAF would have no bearing on the A/C. C. I can't say with 100% certainty but I don't think there are any "hidden" DTC's that do not show up on the DIC. There are plenty of DTC's that will not illuminate the check engine light, but they still show up in the DIC when you do the Options/Fuel diagnostics.

Ask him what the DTC number was.

Furthermore, the only DTC's I know of in reference to the MAF are P0101 (MAF Performance), P0102 (MAF Low Frequency) and P0103 (MAF High Frequency), all of which will illuminate the check engine light.

I'M going to call the dealer back. To clairfy, they are not blaming the A/C problem on the MAF sensor. But they are saying it set a code and needs to be replaced. He says warranty wont cover it because someone removed the screen.

Its amazing that they could be so stupid as to not know there is no screen on the Z06 MAF. And then to try to charge you for it.

Time to take your car to a different dealer..........

There's lots of codes that won't be displayed in the DIC, and can be read by the TechII. Just an FYI.

You mean that won't throw a CEL or won't be displayed on the DIC diagnostics?

Yup. Module to module com timeouts and pending codes, just to name a couple.

Just to be clear, for the most part, the codes in the DIC are the important ones.

Thanks for the quick responses. I called the service manager back and he apologized, said he didn’t know that the Z06 used a different MAF sensor.

I sure it’s not going to be an issue. As the shop that has it is considered by many to be the premier Corvette dealer in Colorado. And they are known for honesty and good customer service.

He said they were still checking out the HVAC. I am pretty sure it’s the left side actuator that is bad. As I spent some time diagnosing it before I took it in.
I’ll let you know what happens.

Just wanted to update that the dealer is taking care of this, ordered new MAF sensor. Replaced left air door actuator to repair a/c problem.

All along they were very professional and courteous, they just flat weren’t aware that the Z06 didn’t have a screen on the MAF sensor.

Going back next week when the MAF sensor comes in, my car stills runs perfect as is.
All in all I am very happy with the service, and I certainly wish I could say I was never wrong about anything before.

Be kind, courteous, and polite. When you get your car back engrave on your eyeball "I am NEVER taking my car to this bunch of putzes again". There is NO excuse for a dealer not knowing the '04 Z06 MAF doesn't have a screen. This is really fundamental. Not knowing something this simple is

Consider that if you hadn't questioned his "expert" knowledge about this that you would have probably paid for a new MAF because you modified the old one. Shame on you.

It's just my opinion, and it oughta be yores - If they ain't got a tech with a Corvette sign, run do not walk to yore car and race out the exit door.
