Something I've been curious about... In a dyno situation, with little or no air flowing into the front of the car, the fans will be on the majority of the time. Now, with the fans on, they will be trying to pull air from anywhere and create somewhat of a vacuum in the area where the honker pulls air from. Would the fans not try to pull air from the honker itself, thereby robbing air meant for the intake system?

At the dyno facility that tuned my car, they run a huge fan in front of the car to help cool things down. Also, after a couple of runs, they let the car cool for a period of time as well.

Does this uint require a hole to be cut in the radiator shroud?

Which is no big deal. If you ever want to go back, they cost about 50.00 at the dealer and about 45 minutes tops to change out. And having the Calllaway name anywhere on your car is not a bad thing!

I'm trying to decide between the Honker and the VaraRam but wish someone would do back to back comparos of them to see which nets better dyno and track numbers.

the way i looked at it when deciding on the intakes was that if the honker makes 99.5% of the power of the vararam, but has 100x more fit and finish quality, why choose something that makes a smidge more power but fits like junk?

Have any of you guys cleaned your Honker filters yet ??

How long did it take, do you have to remove the coupler/MAF, how long did it take for filter to dry before oiling......

Default Architect, you call BS, how would you know?

Went for a ride yesterday and feel the Honker is well worth the cost and time to install. Rev range pulls very strong, second feels great and forth pulls much cleaner. Hard first to second shift still had hop but I think that may be due to my base suspension from what I read. Base suspension will go away this winter for upgraded parts and see what happens.

Have a great weekend to all,

Darion

The point I was trying to make was that this guy is claiming a 36 hp gain by simply changing to a different aftermarket breather system. The biggest claim to fame for his system is the ram air effect and the cooler air from in front of the radiator. A lot of people cut out the scoops where the fog lights are to get cool air to their aftermarket breathers, so there is no real advantage there. The only thing left is the ram air effect which, even with a fan blowing in the general area of the front end, has no real effect on a dyno. And since the fans on the car are probably running, there is the possibility of taking air away from the intake area, as the fans are pulling directly throught the radiator in direct line with the intake area, furthter decreasing the ram air effect.

All this, and still making 36 hp. Imagine if it was working correctly and you could tune it with the actual amount of air that comes into it at xx mph. It would probably make 60+ hp.

I'd like to know the answers to these ?'s as well.

Also, does anyone have a good pic of the filter element?

Well, I just put mine in so I can't say about cleaning. But, I did find this pic

As for removal of the filter, I would say it would be easiest to remove the coupler/MAF to get it out. This really isn't a bad job though, wouldn't take more than a few min. to get out and re-install.

I cleaned mine this weekend. Took it out Friday night. Cleaned it let it dry overnight, reoiled and assembled it Sat Am. How long well Fri Pm about 15 twenty min to disassemble & clean, Sat I cleaned the radiator changed the oil and waxed the car and reassembled by noon. I was going to change the plugs 75,000 on the denso iridiums but they looked like new and the gap wasn't worn....... so I didn't bother!

Howard, to remove the Honker / air filter for cleaning..

1. unscrew and remove all 4 fasteners on the air filter frame.
2. loosen (not necessary to remove) the band clamp holding the oval rubber bridge to the filter housing.
3. loosen (not necessary to remove) the clamp holding the rubber coupler to the throttle body.
4. unhook the connector for the MAF and if 97-2000 the air temp sensor.
5. pull back and lift up on the rubber coupler on the throttle body end.
6. you can now slide the whole assembly back and up, un-hooking the tabs on the front of the air filter frame.
7. pull the filter out, clean, dry, re-oil, installation is reverse of removal (well, almost; after slipping the coupler back onto the throttle body and seating everything, I re-install the 4 filter frame screws, make my way back tightening the clamps).

My car is not a daily driver. If it were I'm not sure I would have put in a CAI at all, most likely I would not have. I live in NE Ohio and at times the rain is very hard and standing water is an issue. The standing water would be my biggest concern for hydrolock and sometimes you cant see it or avoid it.
I responded to your PM I hope that helped.

His car is a heavily modified 427 mostly used for drag racing. Remember, he said hood closed. It could happen especially if he came from an intake like a Blackwing.

I've seen the car in person. It hooks like there's super glue stuck to the rear tires(1.3x 60' times).
