I got under my car this afternoon. I was trying to troubleshoot what sounded like an exhaust leak. Well, I didn't find an exhaust leak. It appears this knocking sound is coming from inside the motor (toward drivers side)
No loss of power or other symptoms yet. What do you think?
If it is coming from the bottom, you prob spun a rod bearing. If so it will get much worse very soon. I ran into the same problem on mine and it's at TSP getting a 402 installed right now. There is always a bright side.
You would know a rod knock w/o ever even hearing one before. Mine has made noises since I got headers. If you have headers they are just louder than normal manifolds. Also those little donuts that couple the exhaust after manifolds always leak a little bit. Check oil pressure, change oil and cut open filter and look for metal. If oil is clean most likely not a rod. Try a thicker oil and see if it changes the noise, can also be an indication of worn bearings.
How loud is the noise? One time we had a customer thinking it was a engine knock and I even thought it was. It turned out to be the internals of the CAT that came apart and was knocking with every exhaust pulse. It sounded just like a bearing knock!
Could be piston slap. Does it happen only when the engine is cold?
its not just when its cold. I guess first thing is to get the car on a lift. So far I have just had it up on jacks. I was flat on my back with a flashlight.
