I have a 99 Vette with Mn6. It has 12000 miles on it.
I had it looked over recently by my local Chevrolet Dealer as I was having the oil changed. The mechanic noted that I have leak on one side of my differential. He felt it did not need to be repaired immediately, but said he felt it needed to be reapired.
He said he wanted to change all the seals he would need to take the differential out to do it. He quoted me a price of $ 950 to do the work. Does this sound to be in the ballpark for this work? Also is this an unusual problem to occur ?
Any information anyone can provide, would be appreciated Thanks, Dave
Unfortunately it is very common. Not sure what you are running, but you can almost upgrade to the Stage I DTE and get it installed for that price and in the end have a better unit.
I'm swapping out my 2.73s for 3.42s and it's $600 from the dealer. It's also $600 from several garages. Also, the guy I'm buying the diff from, said it was in at 8k mi. for leaks.
My '02 leaked at about 8000 miles. Dealer said both side covers were out of shape. Replaced covers a gaskets, never leaked again. But dealer used regular gear lube and I had noise. I Changed the gear lube with proper Synthetic lube and possi additive. no mor noise when turning in my driveway.
I have been through this (7) times with my 2000 Coupe now with 23k miles. It started at 4500 miles and has been consistently failing on average every 3000 miles. The L axle and housing seal has been the site of the leak every time. The L axle cover has also been replaced one time. The most recent repair included both seals (new improved seals and different P/Ns than previous) and an anaerobic sealer (red) for the housing. You should make sure your shop is up to date on this by having them consult w/ the GM tech line. As far as the price, ask; what is the hourly labor rate, how many hours are they charging you and why (check labor times at www.alldata.com), and what are the P/N’s and how much are they. They probably just asked a tech how many hours her wanted to charge and did not go by the book. Good Luck!
