Ecklers has a modified factory air filter cover claiming better performance, air flow and hp,,, has anyone tried this? and by not doing anything to my 04' C5 and leaving it as is, whats wrong with that?,, thanks for the help,, later rj
I don't think there is anything wrong with leaving it as it is. In addition to the little hole in the top, air also flows in from both sides through channels at the bottom of the cover.
2001 C5's and up had redesigned air box covers. They work MUCH better than the earlier covers. If you cut your cover, you may gain 2-3 HP (never feel it). If you want to be all you can be with a STOCK AIR BOX, the best that you will get is the ZIP TIE MOD with a K&N or Green Filter. I personaly would NOT pay for a cut cover! Thats all the Ecklers cover is! You can cut your own and save buck for worth while stuff!
If you want to get the most out of your intake, spend the money and get a HONKER or VARARAM (your choice) i installed the VARARAM and LOVE it!

If you want a stock-looking appearance, a 2002-2004 Z06 air box lid will get you a few horses for about 5-10 minutes of your time. The next step up would be a Halltech Stinger Intake. That'll get you 10 RWHP for about $300 and 30 minutes of your time.
Taken to the next level, you can install my cold air mod for about $40. That'll prevent power-robbing heat from soaking for intake, saving you the HP that you gained by installing the Halltech in the first place.
The Vararam doesn't cost much more but takes a long time to install. Callaway's Honker is one of the most expensive, but relocates your MAF to just in front of the throttle body. This has the added benefit of preventing the MAF's wires from getting fouled by oil from the intake filter. Honker cost is near $500.

Do they look the same as the 2001 Z06 Covers?
My 2004 has this one (although I bought it used).
