I have the oppportunity to get an '02 Z06 cam very cheaply. Considering my car is a stock '98 LS1, and this cam comes out of an LS6 (which I thought had a smaller base circle cam) what would I need to do to correct the valvetrain geometry?
Can this be corrected with just longer pushrods?
Before the flaming begins - the only reason I'm considering this option is because the cam is essentially free. If I can't do this on a minimal budget, I won't do this at all (remember Santa's coming soon).
Couldn't find what I was looking for with the search button, so I'm hoping some guru's out there can hook me up....
With the LS1 heads, the geometry will stay the same but you will need longer pushrods to maintain the lifter preload. Don't remember the difference in base circle between the two cams.
I'm in the middle of that swap right now. The 02 ZO6 Cam #12565308 has (as close as I can measure) a .050 smaller base circle than the cam I pulled out of my 02 LS1 Coupe. I'm actuly waiting for the longer pushrods right now. Be aware that you need to change the valve springs along with your new cam. I installed a new set of “Yellows” Old P/N 12565313 - New P/N 12586484. This is the spring that a 02-04 LS6 would come with.

Those springs will do the trick. The stockers won't do the job. Using the longer pushrods is all you need to correct for the base circle. The LS6 uses longer valves to compensate.
Now, I know I am adding to the cost but I highly recommend changing the timing chain while you are in there. The LS2 timing chains are inexpensive (just the chain) and is an upgrade over the LS1 stock piece.

Thats what I've heard also. Thats a nice stock sounding/feeling cam that should give you a decent HP/Torq bump. Best of luck
