Some people actually have to drive on the highway even in their vette's, not to mention the people that use them as DD. I have had an auto with 2.73's, 3.42's, and 3.73's and a manual with 3.42's, 3.73's, 3.90's, 4.10's, and 4.30's. I think I can make an educated guess as what would be a good all around gear for most people.
I have had 3 different C5 owners drive my Vert. with 3.73 gears and they all went with the 3.73. A forth owner who had 3.42 gears said that if he had driven my car befor he put in the 3.42s he whould have gone with the 3.73 gears. As was stated in previous post its very subjective and IMHO the only way to find out is to drive one.To me the aftermarket cat backs are MUCH more anoying on the highway than gears. I have the Ti exhaust and find that a perfect fit for my needs. I do plenty of highway driving and still love the 3.73 gears. Maybe I got coditioned driving my muscle cars around in the 60s/70s with 3.90/4.10 gears in auto trans cars with no OD.

I went with 390's & 2800 stall. I drove the car home (pre-tune) & was very easy on it for breakin miles but I could tell than car would run hard. It's parked for winter now, but in the spring it will get tuned & I will post my thoughts. So far, the ride home; 300 miles or so back in October I liked my choice.

Default 3:90s ROCK !

It took me over a year to finely decide on 3:90 gears and really I wanted 3:73s but DTE had none and didn't think they would have them anytime soon . but now I am truly glad I put the 3:90s in . my great friend Jimmy BLOWN ECS Z06 was a big influants . talking me in to the 3:90s ........... when I drive down to the cruise inn next spring I will let you know how they are on a long road trip ....... I can tell you my mileage dropped from 29.5 mpg to 26.5 which is no big deal .......... I had 3:15s my rpms went from 2100 rpm or so at 70 mph to 2500 rpm .

why? No-traction is not fun. Poor 1/4 mile times are not fun. It'a all a balance between the driver, the rest of the cars setup (not just the rear axle ratio). Since I will always stay with factory size tires and EMT -type- tires... 3.42's give me my balance; 3.90 or more radical would detract from the fun with my desired setup.

I ran 3.73's with a 4000 stall and about 400rwhp for a couple of years. I also used runflats for that period of time. Traction isn't the best, it's about pedal modulation though.. You can't just mash the gas like you used to. Now with 295 series wide ovals, QA1's all around, 4400 stall, 3.90's, and 410rwhp, the car is a absolute beast on the street. Traction isn't nearly as bad as you'd imagine, but you have to learn how to drive all over again.

The manual tranny C5 guys have the luxury or two overdrive gears, so even with a change to the 4.10, they still have great highway driveability. Sadly, us A4 owners don't have that second overdrive gear

If you go to 3.73 or more radical, I'd suggest leaving behind runflat -type- tires and place something with better grip on the rears.

here's my rear axle ratio change webpage:

You have a great site, appreciate the info. I'll get the 373 in late o7.
