Most engin wear happens when we first start our cars, where there is no oil on the moving parts of the motor. 5w-30 is obviously thicker than 0w-20 so this would allow it to flow to the moving parts of the motor quicker than the 5w-30, i was just curious if anyone runs this kind of oil in there car. I have no problem with the 5w-30, we were just disscusing this topic at work. Thanks
I'd agree with the two above posters. There are several good 0w30s on the market, including the AMSOIL Series 2000 0w30, which will give you the benefit you are seeking when the oil is cold, while still providing the same or better protection when the oil is hot (vice lower protection for a 0w20).
Porsche uses Mobile 1 0W-40, which a very good oil. Really, though, we may be talking about the difference between an engine that lasts 250,000 and one that lasts 270,000 miles. Either way, we will probably all be dead or dricving a different vehicle!
The second number denotes the viscosity at 100 degrees C, and it must fall within the range of 9.3 - 12.49 Cst in order to meet the requirements of a 30 weight oil. Obviously, there is variability in the range with some oils being very close to a 20 weight and others closer to a 40 weight and yet both are 30 weights.
