I just bought a 2002 with 23000 miles in September and was told by the dealer it has a chip in it. Is there a way of telling what kind it is and what the hp gain could be. Thanks for any help.....Dennis
These cars don't get chips, they get reprogrammed. That being said if you have an aftermarket tune the dealer can flash the PCM and put it back to stock. Alternatively if it has any mods you can take it to a tuner and have them look at and/or adjust the current tune for the highest gains.
If the technician said your car has a "chip" in it he obviously is very uninformed about LS motors and C5s and I would find a new place to have your car serviced.
There is a hand held programmer from a company called "SUPERCHIPS", which is maybe what they were referring to...
I have a feeling it's just a salesman who is full of poo. So many cars salespeople sling crap to sell a car... I bet that salesman uses the "This car has a chip to give it 40 more horsepower" on every sporty car he tries to sell. Just my $0.02.

get some EFI Live or someother real performacne software / or better yet have a good reputable tuner do the job.
Computer chips are a thing of the past..Old school..Obsolete..History... All modern vehicles 96 and above have a PCM or a Computer, controlling all functions... Did you ask the sales guy where the distributor is?.. Or how often you should change the points?? ... Or where is the carburetor?? Does it have a Rochester QuadraJet 4bbl?

They are probably referring to a PCM. I put a Stage 2 Jet PCM on my
'97 coupe yesterday. It attaches to the computer located behind the passenger front tire wheel well. It is more like a piggy back PCM if you ask me as it goes between the current PCM and the wire harness attachement to the computer.
Most on this web site will say it ads no HP and to get a dyno tune or whatever, blah blah. From 1st hand experience I will tell you there is a definite difference (at least for my Jet chip, others I do not know), guessing 20 HP, bu if you want a dyno graph call Jet.
Anyway, I would jack the car up, remove front passenger wheel, remove the protective cover in wheel well to expose the computer and take a look at the wire harnesses, there are two and the one in question is the one closest to the wheel well or exterior of car.
I thank all of you for all the feedback, I must say...ya learn something new everyday. I've owned a 71 and 79. The technology in this car is all new to me.
