Default Battery Charger
Addressing the battery charger issue only. I have permanently mounted a Ctek Battery Charger/ Maintainer in my 2000 C5. It works with any automotive battery (has a setting for gel cell batteries like the Optima) and is weather proof. It fits nicely in the fuse compartment. See the following link:

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news,,,the Optima is not a Gel Cell. Its a spiral wound lead acid battery.
