air intake

I'm curious about this. I talked to my smog shop, and he said not to change anything MAF to cats, but that the air induction was okay, and the exhaust was okay. He said not to put anything that didn't look like GM on for the intake, but thought I could use the Z06 composite unit since he looks for GM numbers, but not a specific number. He also said I couldn't use headers, long or short, unless they have a CARB EO number on them. Again, anything from the MAF to the cats.
If you have a reference that conflicts with this, I'd sure like to see it. Best to be prepared. Of course, the difference may be that you're in San Diego, while I'm up in Chico, and we don't have to do the dyno smog tests or anything unless we are labelled a "gross polluter" or have mods that take us to a referee station.
Thanks for raising the issue - I'll check with Jim again, and maybe have him give it a "visual," to make sure. The Vararam isn't too bad to R&R, but is more difficult than some of the others.
Still, it really added to the car. I'd hate to have to abandon it.

If this were true, why would Callaway and K&N go through so many loops to get 50-state certification? To verify, I will contact the State Bureau of Automotive Repair and let you know how they word requirements of the visual inspection. I was told a few years ago that anything that is related to the intake system and that is not OEM, MUST have a C.A.R.B. sticker on it.

Thanks, Bill,
I have to warn those who happen to live in CA that they shouldn't install anything that is not easy to swap out quickly for the visual smog test. That's one of things I miss about Connecticut - no visual smog inspections. In fact, I remember taking my 75 Monte Carlo in for smog. It passed with flying colors despite NOT having any catalytic converter! If that car had been in CA, it would've failed before the sniffer test was administered.

Under CARB Executive Order D-319-6, the Honker air intake system complies with California emissions regulations for 1997 to 2004 Corvettes (except for 2001-04 Z06's). The exemption sticker is included in the box, and it's intended to be applied under the hood for the visual inspection. The inspector's records will also show the E.O. number on file.
50-State Legal Honkers, per CARB E.O. D-319-6:
Part No. 203.51.2500, 1997-2000 Corvette
Part No. 203.50.2500, 2001-2004 Corvette*
*While this part number fits 2001-2004 Z06, the E.O. does not apply to these models.

Callaway Honkers are "50-state legal" for most C5 Corvettes.

So one would naturally assume then, that Callaway did this because of visual inspection requirements, particularly in California. I didn't get a chance to call today, but will do so next week.

Update: the E.O. extends to include the 2001 Z06, but still not the 2002 - 2004 Z06's. Callaway Engineering Dept. has told me that they're not planning to apply for exemption on those applications.
