car quest has their synthetic oil. its actually made by valvoline. when i found that out i started running it in my honda. i never buy "no name" oil otherwise. as for how much i pay for oil changes for the vette...5 quarts mobil 1 and filter- $30 bucks +/-
Castrol Syntec meets and exceeds the same specs as Mobile One. The issue is the ability of the oil to withstand the heat and not break down. Just change the oil every 3-6 months or 3-4 K miles and don't wait for the oil life monitor to tell you to change your oil.

Follow the manual. Once a year, every 10 (or 12 depending on year) thousand miles, or when the oil life monitor tells you to change it. Some smart engineers did actual analysis on these cars and determined the proper intervals for maintenance. The one thing I'd add is that if you store the car for several months, change the oil prior to storing it...
I've seen ranges on my oil life from 5k to 9k before the change oil soon nag message comes up, depending on how I've driven it. Most of the folks in my local corvette club change it once a year before putting it into storage since they don't drive their cars much. I do drive mine, and usually make it 5 months or so before the first change of the year, and then I change it again just before putting it into storage for the winter.
I was wondering if Mobil 1 is better than Castrol or Penzoil?
Derek,
AMSOIL included both Castrol and Penzoil synthetics along with the base Mobil 1 in the older test and the newer Mobil 1 Extended Performance in these two oil comparisions. The info in these tests may help you decide: Comparative Motor Oil Test Nov 05 Comparative Motor Oil Test Dec 03
Not only are those tests 2-4 years old, they use ASTM tests that are not relevant to real world performance. Not to mention they are Amsoil's test. Where is Redline and Royal Purple in Amsoil's literature? hmmm
I'm on my third vette, and I have only run Mobil 1.
1st 1989 bought with 65k sold with 145K
2nd 1993 bought with 55k sold with 133k
3rd 2001 bought with 33k now had 38K
I've never had any engine issues, and when I had my '89 I was much younger. Every light was a race, and I hit it hard and often.
QUOTE! "How much do you guys pay for an oil change with Mobil 1? I only have 12,000 on my '04 C5. I've had 3 oil/filter changes and they've all been invoiced at ~$75.00 (at the stealer-ship).
Actually, I haven't paid a nickel yet, since 5 free oil changes was a "sweetener" the dealer threw in at the last minute during the final purchase negotiation."
Theres the problem!!!! Those stealer ships charge 1/3 markup over what you can get on the outside.
Get a good working relationship with a NON dealership service center and you will save tons of bucks in the LONG run!
If you cant change it yourself,,,,,anything except a dealership! Just make sure you do your homework and ask questions and observe what they do.
Any oil that meets or exceeds GM4718M will do.
The ones I know that do that are
Mobil 1
Pennzoil Platinum
Castrol Syntech
Amsoil
Royal Purple
There is currently debated controvery regarding the new API SM classification. To reduce phosphorous for emissions reasons a key anti wear compound Zinc di-thio phosphate (ZnDTP ) has been reduced.
this has allegedly led to premature wear on roller cams. ANY brand of oil that claims SM status faces this issue.
While all companies have increased other antiwear components, aftermarket performance some cam manufacturers are now recommending the use of Shell Rotella T Full Synthetic 5W40 in the LSx engines. (or other major brands of diesel engine oil like Mobil Delo)
Since thye are formulated for diesel engines to last 1 Million miles, and are intended for mixed industrial fleets, they do not need to comply with the SM category and continue to maintain the use of ZnDTP.
Thanks, Bill. I need to do that. I've been pretty happy with the dealer (who is, without naming names, just north of you near UCONN). I will need to find someone when the time comes to do tires and pressure transmitters without gouging the wheels. My understanding is there are few (if any) dealers in our area who actually service what they sell when it comes to tire changes, so I'll need to find a good shop for that. Problem is, I haven't had any problems, so I haven't had an occasion to build a relationship with a shop.

Have to cleat something up before the sky falls...
The issue with lower Zinc and phosphorous causing increased cam wear only applies to flat tappet cams.
Roller lifters don't have the sliding friction contact that flat tappets have and therefore isn't affected by the chemistry change of newer oil.
with mobile 1 you do not have to change every 3000 miles.
Along with the deep 6.5 quart oil pan, we can go 10k-15k miles easily. You can follow the oil quality gauge on the DIC and it's usually near 10k miles.
