Was reading that thread and saw the great pics from Bill Curlee. It dawned on me that air is drawn from the stock CAI. I am the second owner of my 99 coupe. I have a dual K&N filter CAI replacing the stock CAI. I also noticed a hose, vaguely similar to the above air intake hose dangling by the driver side K&N filter. Is there a problem that unfiltered air is allowed into the check valves? Should I put a small filter on the pump suction hose?

Yes,,,you should purchase a simple filter and install it on the end of the hose. It doesn't need to be fancy. You can use one of those plastic PCV breather air filters that fit inside a carborated cars air filter housing or get one of those mini K&N looking filters. If it sucks up sand and trash it will either ruin the pump or clog the check valves and you will get codes.
