My EMTs had 22,000 miles on them and were down to ~ 3/32" to 5/32". I replaced them w/ Michelin Pilot Sport A/S ZP’s (ZP= Zero Pressure or Run Flat). They were $235.00 and $335.00 respectively from the Tire Rack. The same EMT was $100.00 more per tire! TR can refer you to a local installer in your area. These Michelin tires are much quieter and have a better overall tread ware, traction and temp rating than the EMTs.
Michelin (UTQG) Rating = 400 AA A, EMTs (UTQG) Rating = 300 AA A
I went to Pigeon Forge, TN for a hot rod show a couple of weeks after the new tires were installed. I drove the Tail of the Dragon w/ some friends. This is a mountainous road with 318 turns in 11 miles. (www.tailofthedragon.com) The Michelins handled great. My friends in C5’s w/ EMTs had a visible film of tire dust on the body behind the wheels. Those of us w/ Michelins did not. Can’t wait to try them out at VIR.
How do you drive your car (hard, just cruising, auto-x, etc.)?
Under what weather conditions?
What are your priorities (tread life, max. performance, noise)?
Do you have a budget?
Tire design is an inherent compromise; decide what factors are more important than others, then go from there. Good luck.
Yea!!! I was all excited about the chart until I started to look at what all the high marks were identifing!
All great tires for all weather cruising.
My goals are strictly directed towards grip! I'll slow down if the weather gets wet or cold and if it snows, Ill drive the jeep. One of the down falls of high performance tires is cold weather performance.
If you know this, no big deal. If you dont, you will be disappointed in your tire selection. Like wamara stated: "How do you drive your car (hard, just cruising, auto-x, etc.)?"
My second choice (and a very very close second at that) is the B F Goodrich KDW2s. Due to Goodyears labor strike now, GS-D3s are on hold.
I currently have the KDW2s and thoroughly enjoy them on my DD. They are terrific in both dry and wet.
HTH,
Robert
I GOT LAST WEEK THE KDW2s. HAD THEM PUT ON MY N73s, LOVE IT! I GOT THEM AT DISCOUNT TIRE FOR $890. MOUNTED, HUNTER BALLANCED, THE WHOLE DEAL. I just scheduled to get GS D3's this coming Saturday @ my local Goodyear guy, and he did not mention anything about supply problems. On the contrary, he double checked availablity and called me back to confirm they were definitely available. What do you guys know that I dont?
I ordered a set of GS-D3s for the front on March 2. Tire Rack's website said none in stock, so I ordered from Discount Tire Direct. On Saturday, March 3, they called me and told me that due to the Goodyear strike, all GS-D3s were backordered, and it might be 1 - 3 months before they would be in stock. I left my name on the list, because I bought new rears in November. I didn't replace the fronts in November because they still had a couple of thousand miles left on them. Now they are nearly shot and I can't find GS-D3s anywhere. I don't want to mix brands or styles. I will just have to limp through the strike until my new ones come in.
UPDATE: I just checked Tire Rack and rears are in stock and only fronts are backordered.

I just put rear tires on my 2001 I bought Goodyear Runflats. The fronts have plenty of tread. I would only recommend a Runflat as a piece of mind because the car has no spare tire, with a runflat you could get the car to a Tire Store if the tire is damaged. I talked to a 2000 owner who put on BF Goodrich tires and ran over a board with a few nails and the tire went flat and it cost him $200.00 to have car towed and then found out the rim got damaged. He said he then bought Goodyear Runflats.
