I pulled the rocker covers off for the first time on my 6.5 year old 2001 LS1 and noticed just how dirty this region is. Is there a safe way to clean this area or is it best just to leave it alone?
Not sure what you mean by dirty, but the coil packs come off very easy. Unplug the big center connector, the spark plug wires and then there are five studs and out it comes. Then you can clean the valve cover easily and take the coil packs off the car and clean. The non-residue electronics cleaner available at Autozone should clean them.
Just did the plugs --- see tips posted on this forum. I used a stiff Wheel brush to get most of the crud off of the coils as well as around them and a little air directly from my mouth. Don't see WHY you would want to remove something that is working fine. If its NOT BROKE DON'T BREAK IT. My dad used to say LEAVE IT BE. I used to try for perfection. Spent a lot of $s replacing things I "FIXED". Now a dad myself and my sons took on the perfection adage while I am content to not waste time doing unnecessary "fixin". BIGHANK
