Default Transmission Jack

What is everyone's opinion on buying an ATV Jack to use as a transmission jack?
Sears has one for 90 bucks which is in between the price of the cheaper transmission jack at harbor freight (60 bucks, 450lbs) and the more expensive 140 trans jack(800lbs) at harbor freight. The ATV jack holds twice the weight it appears.

It will work. The only thing I like about the Harbor Freight jack is that it is a scissors, so I am hoping I have a little more fine adjustment with it.

The cheaper screw / scissors Harbor Freight jack is marginal for this application..

I did borrow one from a bud to R&R my rear end during my gear swap (the jack was brand new), but it's load capacity was obviously taxed, refusing to raise / lower smoothly with a load on the jack.

When I needed to R&R the trans out of my wife’s Corolla to swap the clutch, I bought the more expensive HR hydraulic version; highly recommended.

There is no question you get what you pay for, and I don't go under the HF jack. I did find that liberal grease on the jacking screw helped a lot with the smoothness.

I bought a 1000 Lb jack from Grizzly for the same price as the 800 Lb one from Harbor Freight around 135.00. It worked great and I was able to change my clutch by myself, It had tilt front to back and side to side. The only thing I had to add was a nylon cinch strap instead of using the cheap chain that came with it. It held the whole assembly stable with out a problem.

I just bought and used the El Cheapo harbor freight jack, and it worked great. The thing I like about it the most is it's not hydraulic. So there is no bleed down from a leaky cylinder. And it's a scissor jack, so it lifts straight up and down. Can't beat it for the money. If I was going to take a lot of trannys out, I would get something more professional. But for something that I hope I will only need once or twice, it works good enough.
