I need to install a new Cold Air Intake on my 99. I tried to search through existing threads to see any views and opinions on this mod and found NO MATCHES, which now has me even more concerned. Zip told me that it was a good intake and most importantly there is no hacking at the car to get the intake to fit. It goes right on!!!!!!! This will make it easier for me to deal with!!
Advanced Flow Engineering (AFE ) Magnum Force Cold Air Intake
Cost: $289.00
There are a lot of opinions...
I am biased because I am very pleased with my Varararm...
no cutting... and the only documented performance increases here on the Forum... All the others are SOTP anecdotes, while Vararam devotees post up actual drag strip tapes showing 0.3-0.4 second improvement in Quarter milel times and 3-5 mph improvement in trap speeds.
A thought to ponder...Since passive cold air intakes need the air flowing thru them from driving to ram in the air...how do you make a claim that can only be supported on a stationary chasis dyno?????

Will I be OK with this intake??? or should I consider another.
Thanks,
Marc
That actually looks pretty cool, first time I have seen an airbridge like that. Try it, might work if you cut a hole in the shroud to provide some extra cold air charge
I have the Halltech Stinger and while it does not get cold air directly the way it comes, I bought cold air screens from west coast corvette that replace the OEM closed fog light housings. Now I have screened fog light housings that allow cold air to rush in much like a vararam and it directly hits my Stinger.
Even with an open hood while dyno-testing, no vehicle I've ever seen gained 24 HP, which is approx 19 RWHP, so that intake you are referring to (which looks just like a Blackwing, by the way) most likely will never provide that much gain.

My son and I felt the sameway about the 24 HP gain. We felt like they were taking advantage of our HP addictions with that claim. If I email them, I wonder if they could share their dyno test with the forum. IF they could prove it correct, they would have allot of new customers!!! Vendor "HP Stretching" is nothing real new I do not think!!!!

Everyone depends too freakin much on those crappy Dynos. Use the Dyno for tuning and forget what horsepower it says. Never believe a Mustang dyno that has a high stall speed converter. 3200 pound 67 SS Camaro dynoed 685 HP on the dyno, engine dyno said 859 hp, It ran 9.10 154mph on 28x11.50 ET Streets. What gives? Use the Dyno as a tool to tune and make corrections to your combination, not as a well, my car dynoed 500hp so why did u beat me with your car that dynoed at 365hp. I Clearly Walked the dogg on this guy and my trap speed on my Corvette was 5 mph higher. Same car, same year, his modified ZO6, mine a bone stocker with a k&n filter and a little oil treatment called Pro Tech. I will have to admit the protec made a really good difference. Dyno for tuning and comparison not a good bench racing tool.
there are tons of air intake to choose from.. it would really depend on your personal choice.. what might be good to others, it might not with you. another factor would be the budget that you have. anyways, my brother had a Vararam and other corvette performance parts installed to his ride. it works great.

The other thing that disturbs me is the "Cold Air Intake" designation. THIS IS NOT A COLD AIR INTAKE!
I've looked at many intakes and believe me, each has a downside. Vararams essentially block off air that would normally cool off a very hot engine bay (especially with headers in the mix), others "pull" cold air from the outside, but do not benefit from even a small amount of high-speed "Ram air". Those of us who live in CA or any state that requires a visual inspection, should have either an easily swapped intake or one that has a C.A.R.B. sticker (or equivelent).
I can almost guarantee you that none of these add 24 HP without a tune to go along with it.
I say this in all the post about intakes. I had the vararam and swtiched to the calaway honker and i love it. The honker comes with a C.A.R.B. sticker for the LS1.
Thanks for taking the time to help me. I will be posting pics soon of the changes. I sure wish my crossover pipe from Zip (corsa) will hurry up and get in so I can start with the changes. It has been BO for 1 month. I am dying here!
.... Vararams essentially block off air that would normally cool off a very hot engine bay (especially with headers in the mix), ....
I do not think that description is accurate. The vararam takes in air from what used to be closed off fog light recesses. The air flow to the radiator and engine bay is as stock set up. I also have long tube headers and no problems with overheating.
