took my 01 to the stealership last week and they replaced the compressor and the accumulator along with the orifice tube and gasket and 6 cans of r134a for about 1400 and some change. When I got it back it smells like s**t under the front of the hood after it gets warm. I have put the car on ramps to see if anything saw dead under the car and could not hide a thing. It did not start till I picked it up from the shop. would the freon be leaking and that is what I am smelling. Or does anyone else have any ideas?????
I am 99.999934% sure than freon is not used in AC system now a days. I forget exactly what they are using, but it does smell for a bit.

R134A is the replacement for R12 in automotive a/c's, because of it's ozone friendly quality. If anything it has a slightly sweet smell, so you have a problem elsewhere.
6 cans of R134??? They must have been mimi cans! Sounds like someone screwed up and charged you for 3 extra cans. If compressor oil was spilled on the manifold or engine it might smoke a bit but stink,,, it shouldnt. What does it smell like???
AC compressor clutch or belt slipping? Or this happened to me a while ago. I changed my battery and went for a drive. About 10 miles or so down the road I noticed what smelled like rubber burning and it kept getting worse. I stopped and put the hood up but couldn't see the problem. By the time I got home it was really bad and I still couldn't see anything. The next day when I popped the hood I looked real close by the headers and found that the foam surround from the battery box had come off and was laying on the headers down below. Maybe the tech left a sandwich down there or there is something like a hose touching the exhaust. Just a thought.
If they really put 6 cans in your system, I'd look at the a/c belt for slipping. 6 cans should just about lock up the compressor. Too much in my opinion.

My book said the corvette depending on the year would take.....
97'-99 takes 1.63 lbs R-134 a
00'-01' takes 1.5 lbs R 134 a
02'-04' takes 1.75 lbs R 134 a
Six cans would be about 5 lbs if 14 oz in each can.
I would check that invoice again or call the service writer.
It said six cans, and the smell is almost like a skunk, but the car has to warm up for it to smell, does not smell when it is cold. And no I did not hit one on the way home from the shop. I have put it on ramps and looked under it and no dead animals to be found. This is going on for a week. I will call and find out why it took 6 cans to fill my car 1st thing when I get up, I’ve been at work for 22 hours and ready to sleep for awhile(I hope)
Does your AC even work?? With an overcharge it will not cool well or at all depending on how much its over charged and it can smoke the belt!!! Yes that would stink!! Do not let the dealer hood wink you. Ask them "how much R134 should be in the system. They will give you an answer . It should be the correct one. " 1.5 - 1.75 lbs"
Then ask them what happens if its overcharged???? They should say, it will seriously damage the compressor!!
Then say "well how much damage will six cans do???" Show them the invoice. If your AC system is not working correctly, that may be the issue.
R134a does not smell that way and if it was leaking it would be gone by now. Does the car still smell with the ac off? You got overcharged by 4 cans of 134a.
On the six can issue it may use two 1/3 cans so they charge you for three, they had to find they leak so they had to fill it to find the problems so three more. I guess that’s how the six cans were used. I guess I will be pulling the front of the car off this weekend to find the smell.
Instead of putting in 3 cans and determining it "leaks" they shouild have put a vacuum pump on, pulled vacuum to at least 28 inches of mercury and then shut off the pump. If the vacuum dropps after 15 or 20 minutes (I usually wait 30 minutes) then there is a leak and you could use ONE CAN to test charge it and look for the leak. It is also a requirement that anyone commercially doing A/C have equipment to CAPTURE the freon and not simply let it evaporate in the air. If they used such equipment they could have recovered your NEW freon and then REINSERTED it into your system. BIGHANK
