Wanting to install my restricted pushrods. LS1 engine in the car. Manual says I need to find top dead center on #1 on compression stroke. Not sure the best/easiest way to find TDC on compression w/o the timing chain/sprockets visible. Any ideas? Is there a "trick" to do it another way?
No need if you're using oem length rods and the oem rocker arms. Just install them, torque the rockers to 22 ft/lbs, the put the car in gear and turn the rear wheel by hand to rotate the motor a few times then re-check the torque.
Actually, you are supposed to tighten only those on the base circle. I usually wait for intake to close and then bring piston up to top. I also have a boroscope though so it is easy, a good flashlight might allow you to see the piston.

Yes they are a good thing! Do you think they were invented for nothing!
There a good thing for some one on a circle track runnin flat out for hours on end! On a street car that sees top end 5% of the time, they will probably sgnificantly contribute to excessive valve train wear! Yep, GM engineers did a POOR job designing LS1 engines, They only last 300,000 miles! Man that SUCKS!
My car sees a lot of track time on a road course. When driven hard on a track the LS1 has a problem with LOTS of oil accumulating in the rockers. It backflows out the PCV fresh air supply line and into the intake, or catch can if you have one. As such, the oil is in the "top" of the engine, not the bottom where it belongs. Do a search on some of my posts to learn more..... Lots of info in the Autocross and Road Racing Section.
My car will backflow right at a quart of oil out the crankcase fresh air supply line in 4 - fifteen minute track sessions (i.e., about 75 miles).
Thanks for the replies.
Rick
P.S. Consensus is that the 0.040 restricted pushrods are suitable for street use. No excessive wear.
I still say you have other issues... I just ran VIR this past weekend w/ Mazdadrivers... we had a group of 20+ corvettes... many driven by instructors. NOBODY was filling up their catch cans.

You are a real pain in the ***. Is there a reason you feel a need to follow my threads and provide useless, unsolicited input? This thread was about finding TDC and here you come again. You are ignorant and unwilling to accept a common issue experienced by MANY. Get a *uckin' life and leave me alone....
It's not a common issue... it's not experienced by many. I have been tracking this car for over 4 years. I have been browsing various road racing auto-x forums for years, and I have many friends that run their cars.
If I was at the track and saw C5 owners overflowing catch cans on the regular, then I'd agree w/ you. However, that's not the case and never has been.
As for the rockers... that is not useless info... go to www.ls1howto.com. You can save yourself some time and not have to fiddle w/ a wrench between the steering rack.
