Default Headers installed, tune required

hey guys,

I have just installed melrose headers and high flow cats on 02 coupe, nice setup. Car runs good, no codes, slight surge at idle. Would like to get a tune. Anyone know of a tuner in area of columbus/ dayton ohio area. Would a street tune suffice for a header install?

Thanks so much,

Tim Gibson

I would get it tuned. Do you have a intake and exhaust?

Yes, have intake, and corsa pace car catback as well as LTs and high flow cats. Had a street done with intake and catback. Would like to get it tuned, just wondering if street tune is good enough. Don't really want to pay for dyno tune. Also looking for tuner in my area. Previously had street tune in Milford Ohio. Car ran well but is a long drive.

Thanks

Don't think this guy does tuning but he may be able to point you to someone who does.

No tune for me w/ LT's and intake. I cannot justify $500 that most want for such a small amount of mods. My cars smooth as silk though.

No! But we'd like to see some pics of the new set-up!

You'll love having it tuned and getting all you can out of one of the best mods one can do

Thanks,Matt

Re-tunes are important when doing any mod that affects air flow. Not just a WOT tune either. If you are historically running lean during crusie mode the PCM adds a percentage of fuel to keep you at 14.68. If you enter WOT or PE mode from a point that you have been historically lean, the same amount of fuel is added during WOT or PE mode. You could actually end up with less power at WOT because you are rich. The best mod I've ever done was the purchase of HP Tuners Pro with a wideband.

I just put headers on mine 9 days ago. It is a daily driver and I will need to hold off on a tune till the spring by the look of things. Definitely has a bunch more oompf than previously. Question can any harm come of this? In that time frame I expect to put on 5k+ miles.

If you can find a good tuner for $500 I'd jump on it quick Price has gone up and hard to find for less than $600

Thanks for the input. I am gonna take it into Daves total performance (Milford, Ohio) sometime this week for a street tune $175. I'll get the car up in the air this weekend and take some pics. The melrose headers and randon cats is a sweet looking setup.

I looked on the website and the hp tuner looks nice. The problem is how do you know what to adjust to make the car better?

The secret is MAF tuning and to look at your WOT & cruising O2 readings iwith a wide band. You will need to monitor your O2 sensor outputs and adjust your tune to obtain the optimum O2 sensor readings.

Spend the extra cash to obtain your OWN tuning software ( HP Tuners OR EFI Live ) and learn to tweak your on C5 tuning. Tat way, you can adjust your own tune when you change stuff.

After I bought my bone stock 01 Coupe I put on a Halltech Stinger and Borla Stingers and paid for an initial tune. After I install my American Racing Headers sometime this week/weekend I'm going in for a retune. A little money spent now is a lot better than a ton of money spent on a tow truck later.

My old z06 (02') made 387rwhp with out a tune and Stainless Works headers and a halltech stinger. I didn't see a need for a tune.

My current z06 is stock with a tune lol. It made 372rwhp, now i can't justify headers lol

Is there a link someplace that explains how to do that in a little more depth?

Not really, there are plenty of how to's for tuning, but its something that takes months/years to learn to do correctly. I was fortunate enough to apprentice under one of the southeasts most respected LS tuners and it still took a LONG time to get a full grasp of how everything works, and to this day i learn something new on every car i tune. I do agree with the above poster who says buy EFI Live and learn to tune your own car, but its not gonna happen overnight, very steep learning curve.

For those that are running on headers untuned, yes the car will run just fine, but youd be amazed at how inneficient it really is running, when you get all the monitoring equipment in the car and do a street tune, youll find out just how "off" an untuned car with headers is.

Head over to hptuners.com and look at their forum. There is a ton of help there. The next version is supposed to come with autotune. You still need to know what you are doing but it will speed up the process of a complete street tune.

If you know some who has it ask them to scan your car while you drive. That part doesn't require licenses. That's how I got hooked. I was running about 8% lean during normal cruise. The PCM will compensate for that but that number will carry over if you go into Power Enrichment mode. The narrow band O2s do nothing when you are in Power Enrichmode (no adjustments). The PCM does a "guess" on how much fuel you need but errors on the side of caustion (rich). That's why you need a complete tune and not just a WOT tune.

Maybe it is better then to pay someone to tune it for you? I have also read stories on here about people getting their cars tuned wrong which trashed their motor?

How much do reputable shops normally charge to do a tune for you?
