In the never ending quest for more rwp we decided to run a back to back test between 3 air boxes.
This is on my C5z with 383, 237/242 cam, ported fast 90, ls2 TB, Stage 2.5 heads, LG Longtubes.
Breathless Vortex
K&N FIPK
Callaway Honker
We started with the breathless and moved on down the line all intakes got 3 pulls with no tuning, all timing was set at 29* total and the af ran at 13.1-13.2:1 on all of the pulls
here are the dyno sheets
A comparison of all 3
Green callaway
red K&N
Blue Vortex
Here is the 3 vortex pulls
The 3 K&N pulls
The 3 callaway pulls
All tests were within 15 minutes of eachother start to finish
It would be interesting to see some of the other options tested in this manner as well - the zip-tie mod, the Halltech TRAP/STINGER, the Vara Ram, The Twin Ram.....
This is a great post. I think we all thirst for independent comparison data like this. Thanks!!!
I have the FIPK...I also cut air ducts in the shroud to allow more exterior air. Did some testing with a wireless therm and there was a significant improvement in air intake temp.
This may account for the better results you had with the honker. Given the generally accepted formula of every 10* you cool the air you get 1% more power.
With my improved FIPK, I'd expect it to be equivalent to the Honker, particularly when moving.

In these tests the shroud was cut open still for the breathless and the callaway. So all 3 had the open shroud with a Blower fan blowin in the air ducts at roughly 30-35mph
My K&N came with a Dyno sheet showing a gain of 18.57 HP over the stock airbox. From your experience, do you think this is accurate or overstated?
Most mfg's of CAI's claim similar gains to the K&N.
Thanks!
al
I would say that it is probably a bit overstated, maybe I will run a test on that as well? Stock to k&n I have a few customers with mostly stock c5zs that would probably be willing to do something

That would be fantastic! Too bad we're on opposite coasts, you seem like someone I'd like to do business with.

Thank you for this unbiased information. What is most interesting is closing the hood during the dyno runs and then seeing what a change some CAI actually make. I have seen no drop in performance in the Honker or Vararam but power drops in the K&N, Blackwing, etc. The true cold air intakes seem to not be affected by the hood being closed to outside air.
Thanks...
I was impressed with the amount of development that went into the Honker and just looking at the large radius bends and large filter element, it looks right. I am surprised that the rammer wasn't closer to the honker though.

Thanks again for the info.
I think the breathless just has a bad filter/box design to be 100% honest....
Well, I feel good about the CAI currently on my car, thanks for doing this
Me too. And when the car is in motion it only gets better!
I believe the only other CAI that may be better, performance wise, would be the Vararam. I don't think a dyno test would prove anything though unless you had some kind of high velocity fans parked in front of the car when doing a few pulls.
Great info! One thing to note is that this comparison may differ if running a stock engine. I recall many years ago when Lingenfelter tested Borla Stingers on a twin-turbo LS1 and compared them to "the competition". The gain in horsepower was astounding:
However, the same exhausts on an otherwise stock C5 wouldn't be nearly impressive. I think the same is true of intakes on beefed up engines - the highest-flowing intake will look very impressive with big gains. Unfortunately, stock engine increases with the various intakes will not be as pronounced.
Keep that in mind when you look at differences among the brands and increase in HP over stock components.
We will most likely test more in the future, these where just the CAI's that we had here at the shop.
Excellent post of an unbiased comparison.
As a VaraRam owner I also would like to see it added to the mix of the intakes tested.
Just a thought.... How valueable would it be to monitor and compare MAP sensor data during these tests? Wouldn't that be a good indicator of intake efficiency?
How much was the car driven after each intake was installed before dyno tested?
I was under the impression the ECM takes time to "learn" when a different intake is installed?
