Actually they should gear for the trap speed and stop adding power when they cant get the power to the ground anymore. 60's fall with gearing. Gears slow the rotation speed of the tire which lets you hook faster (actually it hooks when the car reaches the speed that the tire rotation is at).
Maybe if you're predominately a drag racer, but I am not interested in drag racing my car.
I am more interested in top speed and handling. The Z06 tranny was primarily geared for road racing not drag racing.

YES and NO. Many guys in SCCA T1 take out the MN12 and put in MN6s just for that reason, gearing.
Most road race circuits are spent in 3rd and 4th gear with an occasional 2nd. The MN12 2nd gear is lower then the MN6s 2nd gear and many times the MN12 2nd is just too low of a gear.
5th gear is a non issue as it is TOO high for most circuits. If you have the GM Motorsports gear box with a .85 5th gear ( MN12 5th at .84 too ) then that would be used occasionally too.
Gearing is always a challenge. Too make up for gearing raise the red line, to you can run 6800-7000 rpms

I know this is an old post but I find this very interesting primarily because I have no idea what you're talking about.
