thanks again guys, a bunch of great suggestions - i have been doing honey do's for the past couple days, so i'll try to get to removing the plugs tomorrow, the crescent wrench on the crank bolt sounds like a great idea - however, does anyone know exactly what size it is, i may have a wrench big enough to avoid rounding the bolt!
it IS a manual so the problem with it not being in park is a non issue.
i DO hear the starter engage - interesting, my girlfriend says - hey, it sounds like you have a dead battery - that's also on my list.
i will also try to rock in 4th or 5th, but that's going to be hard - as i don't think she'll know what she's looking for, and i don't think she can push the car so i can look - but we'll try!
i too agree that it just stopped working, however, a few days before this happened, i drove a while, shut off the car, started it back up and it looked like a white cloud was coming from the back of my car (it might have been grey smoke) but i hadn't seen this prior or since that one incident
what does white/grey smoke mean????
I'll report back as soon as i have some findings - hopefully tomorrow!

if you had white smoke,, you might have a bad head gasket .. DO NOT try to turn over the motor until you remove the plugs.....you could mess up a rod and toast the motor , you may need a head gasket, but thats cheaper than a short block.
pull the plugs, unplug the coil pack ( if you want) and get a good battery and see if it cranks, Check the water level in the surge tank to see if its ok. Look at the condition of the plugs to see if any are cleaner than the others.
dont even try to push it and turn it over till you pull the plugs...
as said earlier I would put it in a high gear and see if you can roll it to see if the engine will turn some. I can't imagine the engine blew. Even if it is stuck I would have to say it's hydrolocked from a bad injector.
Pull the *#@%& plugs awready. Then try some of suggestions above for turning the engine over. Trying to turn the engine using very forceful means can severely damage the hardware if the engine is hydraulicked.

Man, the OP is patient! I wouldn't be able to sleep, let alone wait for days, to find out what was wrong.
White smoke = coolant in combustion chamber = bad head gasket. Do not force the motor to turn over until the spark plugs have been removed.

This has been stated several times before. Unless you want a new Toyota, as in the ad that the owners of some generic car destroy it so they can take advantage of Toyota's new financing plan, listen to what they have been saying. JMHO.
sorry guys to keep you all in such suspense - i pulled the plugs today
it's not that i'm patient, i just feared the worst and figured it would cost me a fortune to have it fixed - as i just quit my job, i didn't have the funds to fix the car anytime soon, so troubleshooting it wasn't a priority!
the prognosis......
ANTIFREEZE came trickling out the second cylinder back on the drivers side when i removed the plugs!
guess i'll be replacing a set of head gaskets!!!!!
can anyone point me to a good write up on how to do that?
i have some help, but no EXPERT help, so it'll be the dumb leading the blind!
LS1 how to is a good start. Do some reading, ask a few questions and you should be good to go. A head gasket change should be no more than a long day, or 2 short ones. Just take your time, don't break anything and don't skip any of the important (clean the threads in the block ) steps.

Was the engine running and stopped suddenly or running and then you tried to start and it wouldn't turn over? Been so long I can't remember.
