Default Target: 450 rwhp

I just bought a '01 Z06 with 7k miles. Mallet installed a custom 202 cam (whatever that is), ported and polished the heads, long tube headers(but left the h-pipe?) back in 2002. I dyno'd it Monday and it has 382 rwhp. I would like to get at least 450 rwhp without forced induction, and not touch the bottom end. Can anyone recommend the best way to acheive that goal? I'm thinking cam, but would like to keep it hydraulic lifters. Also....the car has a Blackwing air filter. Thanks.

Hmm. I know of an early C5 that makes 436 at the wheels, and it's all cam, heads, headers, and intake.

I would change your intake manifold to a FAST 90, get a bigger cam (and the valve springs/rockers/lifters to match), delete your cats (or get cutouts or high-flow cats), underdrive pulley and a good tune. I think you can do it, but it's hard without touching the bottom end.

You are going to sacrifice some road manners to achieve 450 RWHP with bolt ons. It can readily be done and you will no doubt receive plenty of recommendations on how to achieve it. My advise:

1) Give lots of thought to how you are going to use the car. Is it a daily driver or and weekend / track car. If you're driving it in traffic every day then you are going to want to be very careful not to over-cam the car shooting for peak RWHP.

2) Don't skimp on the tune. Find a good tuner and pay the bucks. You will not not make a better investmant in your modification dollars.

I'm surprised you're not closer to 400rwhp on that setup alone...

Thanks to all who responded. After checking further, it seems the car already has the AFR 205 heads. I kind of think the cam is no more than maybe a std. '02 or later LS6 factory cam. However the intake is the newest version of the LS6/ LS2. I will definitely be changing the cam. I used a FAST 90 intake on an earlier project and liked the results. However, some of the more knowledgeable tuners tell me that it is no better than the factory LS6 intake. Does that seem accurate? I know it was a good upgrade over the std. LS1 intake. The car will not be a daily driver, however I don't want to be concerned on a 100 mile cruise with things like supercharger belts breaking. That's why I prefer not tog that route....maybe nitrous, though. Also, the tuner I use is Backstreet Performance, in Medina, Ohio. Very reasonable and the best I've ever dealt with. I would recommend Rich to anyone in the area who wants to get the most out of their LS engines.

We've gained 18 RWHP on a cam only 2002 z06. I'd say there is definately a gain over the stock LS6 intake vs. the fast. Good buy with the AFR's though!

That's a 500rwhp setup.

G5X2 and the above heads/manifold should get you to the 450-470 ballpark, and not be quite so radical.

Hmm...even with a stock cam you should be making more power with those AFR's. Are you sure they are AFR's? It should be pretty easy to identify them...

If you dont lay down two black streaks down the strip or from corner exit to the braking zone, you NEVER have enough HP

Hi guys,

There are plenty of ways to get 450+ rwhp from a C5 Z06.

Typically speaking a set of LG Pro Long Tube headers, cold air induction and one of our G5X3 cam packages should put you in the 420-440rwhp range.

You could always step up to the larger X4 cam, or add in a set of AFR heads, or maybe a FAST 90mm intake. There are a number of different ways to add in more hp.

LG Pro's/AFR 205's/X4/FAST 90mm....that would put the car close if not over 500rwhp.
