my 1997 c5 no longer shows what gear it is in. the red line stays in one gear, no matter what gear you are in. my local chev dealer wants $750.00 to fix the "unit"

Same thing happened to my 98 A4. The little red or orange gear indicator is a little plastic piece which is easily broken. Remove the center console, shifter boot, and expose the shifter. You'll see it in pieces right away. I found a used shifter at a Corvette salvage yard for $100 because the dealer would not sell me just the plastic piece.
I agree. The little plastic indicator arrow is broken. I missed out on a new assembly for $35 on the auction site, and am looking for another one to swap out. I tried to glue the indicator, but it's about impossible to keep in place while you put everything back together.

Find a new dealer .... the GM retail for that part is about $200.00 (I believe it is part # 12562754 - but verify that before ordering) so they are soaking you for about $500.00 in labor ... that is WAY high ... I'd say a couple of hours MAX ..... so should be more like $400.00 (total) to replace ....
