rocker tapping
roller cam installed with 589 LIFT and new Comp. roller lifters and Comps. crome push rods.
I also used Comp cam roller rockers for a hi lift cam. My problem is the tech that did the work did all the valvetrain adjustments to specifications. He actually did a great job. The engine on the dyno after tuning has 500 RWHP. The only issue I have is the engine sounds like the rockers are not adjusted correctly you can hear tapping from the rockers. I asked why does it sound like that he said that it's because of the Patriot heads. I swear that excuse just doesn't fly with me. I spent all this money to get this engine to this point to hear this tapping sound under the hood. This is driving me crazy I want to get this rectified. Does anyone have this problem the car runs great but this tapping is a big issue with me. Hey guys anyone out there can help me. Maybe a Comp Cam tech or some from Patriot will read this thread.
I'm scared i'm going to drop a valve and ruin my engine need some advice.
Thanks

I just had some serious mods put on my car and I am now running about 455HP at the rear wheel. I have a pretty agressive cam in the upper 230s with 113LSA and I am running TF 215cc heads and Harland Sharp RRs with hardend pushrods. My car is relatively quiet at idle but I do get some valve train noise around 2200RPM. I spoke to my tuner and he said some noise is going to be indicative of this this setup. Headers are going to amplify some of this noise. I think you have to expect some noise with a high lift agressive cam setups. That said, you might want to check your pushrod length, wipe pattern on the pushrods, and rocker arm pre-load. Good luck with it.
Thanks for your response

Rocker wipe can only be adjusted on those rockers with shims. Once wipe is set, then lifter preload is set with pushrod length. Do you know what steps he took in setting the valve train up and how much lifter preload you have? Too little lifter preload will increase noise. Also, look at the pushrod to head and pushrod to rocker cup clearances to make sure there is no interference. The valve train will be louder, but based on your description it sounds like it may be too loud indicating an issue. Have you ever had the chance to listen to another head/cam car?
I don't see how "Patriot Heads" themselves could be the cause. All the parts you added will contribute to more internal engine noise, but it shouldn't be obnoxious.

Comp rollers have been knows to be very noisy.
The next question are the push rods the correct length?
Which springs did you use?
If the valve tech did a great job on installation, it would not be making that much noise.

Improper valve train set up and installation does though.
VETTENUTS and AU N EGL are correct. The first thing I would examine is to make sure there isn't any mechanical interferences and then examine push rod length. Find out what push rods were installed in the set up. Stock length probably wont work and it sounds like the ones that are in there are too short. I would have it checked using a push rod clearance checker and get the correct length rods for sure.

I will take it back and have them check the pushrod lenght. The outfit that did all the engine work is very reputable in our area. I didn't buy the excuse he gave me about the Patriot Heads that's why I have posted this on the forum. I wanteed to validate his excuse.
Thanks!!!
Guys.
