From the Service Manual .......

Traction Control System (NW9)

When drive wheel slip is noted when the brake is not applied, the EBCM will enter traction control mode.

First the EBCM requests the PCM to reduce the amount of torque to the drive wheels via the requested torque signal circuit. The PCM reduces torque to the drive wheels by retarding spark timing and turning off fuel injectors. The PCM reports the amount of torque delivered to the drive wheels via the delivered torque signal circuit.

If the engine torque reduction does not eliminate drive wheel slip the EBCM will actively apply the drive wheel brakes. During traction control braking, hydraulic pressure in each drive wheel circuit is controlled to prevent each drive wheel from slipping. The master cylinder isolation valve closes in order to isolate the master cylinder from the rest of the hydraulic system. The prime valve then opens in order to allow the pump to accumulate brake fluid in order to build hydraulic pressure for braking. The drive wheel inlet and outlet solenoid valves then open and close in order to perform the following functions
* Pressure hold
* Pressure increase
* Pressure decrease

"Pumping" the brakes is usually a function of the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) ..... which is a completely different function than the others the EBCM performs ...

Traction Control communicates with the engine as part of its function (and controls rear braking only) .... Active Handling can use a single brake caliper in the performance of its function (which you can't do stepping on the brake pedal) ... and other functions such as DRP (Dynamic Rear Proprtioning) and RSC (Rear Stability Control) also are functions that control portions of the brake system as compared to your limited control of either all calipers, or none, from the brake pedal.

You can play in " OFF " mode! It completely shuts off Active Handling and Traction Control,,,,But,,,, if you think that your better than the computer be my guess to use it.

There are time when driving with the system in the OFF mode is appreciate but, for the majority of people on the highway, they shouldn't do that!

If your car is equipped with Active handling COMPETITION Mode is very cool!

I don't think that you can shut off the anti lock brakes unless you disable the EBTCM.

Driving without TC on can bite you in the butt really quick.
360's are not out of the question.

You are correct on the ABS staying on Bill.

I personally shut everything off when I'm on the road course, it has improved my lap times substantially, but for street use, I'm with you. Leave it on or in comp mode.

AH remains on, TC is off. In my car, just hold down the AH button for something like 5 seconds and the DIC will display something like Traction Control Disengaged.

Don't forget that (especially with an automatic) there is torque management even when traction control is not engaged. It alters timing and fuel to lower torque with gear changes to reduce stress on the drivetrain.
