Default Question about Coils !

Hi everyone. I wanted to ask what the differences (if any) are between the LSX coils are ?

On MSDs website they say that there are built in drivers in the stock coils. can anyone elaborate on what this means?

Reason why I'm asking is I had a 388 LT4 that spun to 8000 rpm and I wasn't happy with the timing accuracy of using a distributor (removed the opti and used a dual sync old style dizzy to work with the Gen 7 DFI ecm ).

I am currently looking at installing a crank trigger and the new accel coil on plug controller box. So I wil obviously looking at buying coils and the ls1/6/7 coil packs are easy to find everywhere as I plan on using the ls mounting brackets as well.

Are the msd coils much better than the stock ones? are there difference between the different years for mounting brackets?

any help is appreciated

I should be making 700+rwhp ( will find out Sunday on the dyno) and am using the stock coils. Many of my buds in the F/I section are making much more power and using stock coils. MSD's aren't worth it for sure.

I Believe them to be overkill myself. I was tempted to get them for the looks. I am nowhere near 700 rwhp the 388 made 479 rwhp the new 370 ci should make slightly more. I just wanted to have coil per cyl since I'm turnng 8000 rpms I don't like the old style distributor doing the work with a 14 inch coil wire from the dizz to the coil location at the front of the motor.

ANything I need to know about certain years of coils or on the ls1vs 6? have they changed at all or are they all the same?

You could paint your coils red (or any color) and have the same appearance as the MSD coils...

All 97-2004 C5 coils are the same.

I have read that the truck coils provide better spark, don't have part numbers or personal verification though. They are direct replacement for LS1 coils.
