Default Torque Question

I have a 1/2" drive torque wrench. I need to get a 33mm nut up to 118 ft-lbs. If I use a 1/2 by 3/4 adapter (the 33mm socket is 3/4) on the torque wrench does this change the precision of the torque? Thanks

I use adapters on torque wrenches with good effect as long as the components are of good quality and in good condition. I have cross-checked with non-adapter setups and found no significant difference.

Make sure you torque slowly to get the best result.

As long as you tighten -slowly- it will not make a difference, pretty much regardless of the quality of the adapter.

Trivia: because it doesn't put its torque down slowly (the dynamics of be situation being that the adaptor can twist & untwist, absorbing a significant portion of each pulse), using an adapter with an impact wrench will dramatically affect the torque it puts on a nut.

Adapter + impact wrench = I can't get this damn nut to break loose!!!

Get yourself a 4 foot piece of pipe to user asw a breaker bar and you'll be able to break the engine loose.

It's fine as long as what you are using leaves the bolt in line with the square drive of the torque wrench. Something like a crow's foot that moves the bolt off to the side will affect the torque.

... the torque setting will only change if you change the lever arm length of the configuration. If you search the internet, you can find correction formulas for different setups like crow's feet and offset adaptors, etc.

No, because the axis of rotation, thus the torque applied about that axis, is the same.
