Default Oil pump o-ring has me scared!

So I'm doing my cam swap next Friday, and all this stuff I'm reading about the oil pump o-ring has got me pretty worried.

What I've gathered:

-Pick up two BLUE oil pump o-rings, just in case one gets pinched

-Keep a clean rag under the oil pump pickup, JUST IN CASE the bolt gets dropped.

-Practice reinstalling with the OLD o-ring in place first.

-Leave the oil pump unbolted when attaching the pickup tube, with the O-ring and tube well-lubed with motor oil

-The pickup tube should "snap" into place and be fully seated before being bolted in, otherwise the o-ring will get pinched

-Once it is seated and bolted in, bolt the oil pump in place.

Does this sound accurate? Any other tips anyone else can contribute?

Thanks

You could use some Dow Corning 111 grease or a similar product to hold the o-ring in place so that it doesn't get pinched.

Put the well lubed o-ring over the pickup tube first and then slide pickup tube into oil pump. Do not put the o-ring in the pump first and then slide onto pickup tube. That is how most o-rings get cut.

you could try some sex wax on the O-ring so that it has a less likely chance at ripping when you start sliding it down on the shaft.

I agree with the other folks here. It’s not that big of a deal. Lube it up, slide it on the tube, once on, make sure it’s not twisted or nicked, and install the tube into the pump. As far as lubes, I personally would use nothing but the same type of oil I plan to run in the engine. Using thicker lubes of unknown properties adds a risk factor of contaminating your engine oil with something that could hurt the engine now or later. Plain oil works fine.

Keep us posted on how things are going. I’m sure you will do fine.

Regards,

Eric D

Practice with the old one. Make sure the tube is centered and it will slide in with a little push. If you have to force it then its wrong. I use Redline Assembly Lube, stays in place and lubricates much better. I also clean the tube and put it on the tube dry so it stick to the tube.

The job isnt all that difficult and like many have already stated, lube it up, slide it on the pick up tube and gently push it in to the pump. If your really concerned, once the tube is fully seated in the pump, use a small inspection mirror and look at the flange and see if you see any of the O ring. If you dont, your golden. If you do, its pinched. I had my oil pump out 5 times and never once had an issue with the O ring.

Thanks guys! Just trying to cover my bases. The less hang-ups, the quicker I'll get this done and the less headaches I'll have.
