AMSOIL vs Havoline ATF Viscosity Testing
For the original poster, these AMSOIL fluids are recommended by AMSOIL for Dexron III applications and seem to perform well with paper blocker rings. Mine is an 02 Z06, so can't comment directly on its performance with the paper blocker rings, but lots of guys on the forum are using the AMSOIL fluids with no problems that I'm aware of.

The old fluid looked like metal flake paint.
It had lots of wear particles in it. My thoughts are that the wear particles cause the synchros and blocker rings to not work correctly and you get the rough shifting. As soon as I changed the fluid, it shifted excellent. I changed the fluid in my 02 Z after 27,000 miles and the fluid didn't have hardly any wear products but the fluid was a little darker than I thought it should be. The new Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF worked well in that tranny also!
