anybody have any info on outside rear-view mirrors that come apart ? The keeper on the inside of my passenger mirror came off, and the dealer says there's no fix, must replace. The keeper's a 10cent item but it appears to be impossible to compress the huge spring inside the mirror without completely destroying it. Naturally the dealer wants about $300 for a new one, plus it has to be painted to match.By the way it's on a 98 coupe if it makes any difference. Any great ideas? I could always just glue it solid, right?
Thanks guys!
I had the keeper come off a second time on the same mirror so before putting it back on, I drilled a small hole through the shaft. Once the keeper was pressed all the way down on the shaft, I managed to push some safety wire through the holes to keep the keeper from sliding off again. It was tedious, but worth the effort.
Instead of using a bolt, nut & washers to compress the spring. I used a 12" piece of all tread and drilled a 1/8" hole through it about one thread in from the end. Then I cut a piece of 3/4" copper water pipe about 1/2" long? Insert the all thread through the mirror, pin, spring and retaining clip, next put the copper pipe on top of the clip (which will act as a spacer) then slide the 1/8" drill bit in the hole you drilled. Put a nut/ washer on the other end of the all thread and tighten the nut till the ring snaps in place. ( I made the factory groove in the pin deeper with a hand held hack saw blade) I like the idea posted above about a pin added above the snap washer.
