A new solenoid cost $40+ dollars. 
A new GM starter comes with a new solenoid but its a wallet buster. From what I remember its close to $400. I disassembled my starter when I had it out and that sucker looked brand new sans a little brush dust. The only thing wrong with mine was that damn solenoid.
If your dead set on getting a starter, get a remanufactured one from AZ or advance.

Question on batteries.....once a battery is manufactured, does it begin to degrade as fast as a battery under load? (ie one brand new sitting vs, one being cycled in car with no deep discharges - normal use). So if I were to trickle charge a new battery (in garage) vs one in the vehicle does this make a difference to extend its life? Reason I have is I have a new red top ready to go as spare, but red top in C5 still good (should I just install it??) for maybe 6 months - 1 year.
