The optima red top in my car took a dump on me, and will no longer hold a charge. I refuse to pay $190 for a replacement locally, and unfortunately cannot wait for one to be shipped to me from Hinson. My choices are Advance, Murrays, Duralast Gold from Autozone, Sears, and costco. I have a HEAVILY modified car, however I do, for now at least, have the stock stereo. What would you guys recommend?
A walmart special will do you FINE. If they have one CCA series bigger available, that will fit your car, get that.
If you cant stomach stuffing a walmart battery in there, consider the AC Delco Professional series battery. They are superior to most any other battery and comes with a 50 month warrenty! Do an internet/google search on it and see who sels it in your area.
Walmart $60 special is my next battery and I have a RED Top in there now.. I can see paying that much for a stinking battery either!

Thanks Bill! Looks like the Murrays up the street carries the AC Delco battery. I'll call there in the morning!

The Wal-mart MAXX is about $75 and a very good battery, although it IS bright yellow! It carries a 36/108 warranty. A bit better battery is the Duralast Gold for $89. It has 720 CCAs and carries a 36/96 warranty.
As Bill mentioned, the AC Delco Professional is a stellar battery with a 50/84 warranty - the best free replacement warranty in the world. Unfortunately, some auto parts stores that carry AC Delco batteries, do not carry the Professional series. I was able to get the store manager to order one for me at just over $120.
I've used the cheaper Wal-Mart battery in my Mazda and that lasted almost 6 years, so it may do just fine if you are struggling, financially.
On par with that is the Costco Kirkland battery. It goes for $60 and carries a 36/100 warranty. The one in my son's Civic lasted 6.5 years.
FYI ... I talked to a dealer who sells both Interstate and ACDelco Professional series. He said he gets many more Interstate batteries back with problems compared to ACDelco.
Not sure if Johnson Controls can build anything of quality ... especially the Optima line. I've had Interstate batteries in the past and they were good ... but maybe they were made by someone else at that time, not sure.
I used the red top because I didn't want a vented battery throwing fumes around my engine compt. when i was throwing the car around the corners.
My 2c
A non-AGM battery will not "throw fumes" unless the alternator is overcharging it. And since the battery should be strapped down, there is no need to worry about aggressive cornering. However, there might be a problem is you flip the car upside down; then again, your battery would be the least of your problems.
I had to lol at this. The ac delco is made by johnson controls.
I have to agree on the optima's though. They closed the us plant and are made in mexico.
By the way, I make batteries for a living, at johnson controls. I see how they are all made etc.
Well, it's apparent that Johnson Controls has their batteries made all over the place, so this naturally leads to room for quality issues galore.
The main point I wanted to make was that feedback from someone who sells both Interstate and ACDelco claimed that there are more problems with the Interstates than compared to the ACDelcos.
Does that correspond with your battery experiences at Johnson Controls?
