It has come to my attention that those of us who want to use LS1Edit program and who already have Steve Cole's Powerloader on their pcm may be in for some trouble. I understand that Steve Cole has locked some of the pcms after they are loaded so they cannot be read. LS1Edit cannot be used if this is the case. The remedy is to either get the pcm flashed at a dealer or get a new pcm for around $200.
Now this upsets me, if true, because I do not clearly see why the locking is our computer is necessary. Since just about all of us cannot get in their and read what he has done to alter the pcm (well now we can :D ). I guess it may have been initiated in antcipation of the LS1edit release.
so anybody run into this problem yet?? i know this is a lil early since the Edit program is just coming out so i will keep this to the top for awhile>
anybody care to debate the ethics of the possibility of our pcms being locked and thus requiring us to shell out some extra cash just to get us back to the start?????
Re: Ls1Edit users AND Stve Cole programming. (intel55)
intel55,
Basically Steve Cole, and Ed Wright for that matter, are protecting their business from being copied. There were some cases of LT1's being done by a programmer then someone coming along and copying and selling their files via LT1 edit. They have a lot of time and money invested in this and I can see why they would want to protect that investment.
Besides, I believe there is a lot more that Ed and Steve can do to the PCM's then LS1 Edit will allow.
Re: Ls1Edit users AND Stve Cole programming. (intel55)
I know of one person that has Powerloader programming and has recently purchased LS1edit. He was able to read Steve's Powerloader Programming without any problems into LS1Edit and make any changes he desired.

I have programmed over (in addition to and replaced) PCM programming by Cole, Wright and a couple of others when the results were not what was expected, including my own PCM which after 3 trys by mail order was still no where close.
Also, where a lock was attempted, we were able to unlock it. You just have to be very careful doing it.

Yep,
Should not be to hard to "unlock"
Anyway I understand the why they try to protect it, but with today's technolgy, it seams like those days is soon gone.

The way I see it...I paid for the Power Loader program. I plan to get LS1 edit soon. I'd like to add to or enhance what the PL did. So I'd be pissed if I could not copy it.
Re: Ls1Edit users AND Stve Cole programming. (chuckster)
As stated in the other threads, tweaking is possible. Copying the program over to then pass to others is probably why ED and Steve and the others lock certain parts out to protect their knowledge base and their R&D efforts.
You can save your current program to the 'in house' versions. I confirmed that with Speedworks today. Not sure on the 'at home' versions.

I think LS1Edit allows you to do jsut as much as Wright or Cole could do. However, I am just speculating. So far from what I have seen other guys do with the program it will do an enormous amount.
I agree that Cole and Wright are entitled to protecting their hard work and effort, but I just disagree with them possibly locking our computers. I do not know what a "correct" or more reasonable soultion would be right now if they were worried about code theft. I somehow doubt that was an overly large concern though.
Well I hope I do not run into a probelm similar to LAPD, but you know computers... nobody evers knows what the f*ck just happened when they go bad... damn evil things :D
Re: Ls1Edit users AND Stve Cole programming. (intel55)
For the 01 and laters... Shoot me an email in mid-march and I'll let you know how it's going.
We should also have a full bench setup for out of towners who want to send their PCM's in the near future, and not pay fedex to ship their whole car :D
Re: Ls1Edit users AND Stve Cole programming. (nevrenuf)
how much, so far would you estimate ls1edit can do as compared to p2?? A friend told me that so far he does not see a whole lot missing that. However, he has had it for only one day hahha :D
I am assuming that in time it should be 100%.
still waiting for mine... :( so I am not as well informed personally as of yet
Re: Ls1Edit users AND Stve Cole programming. (intel55)
Having worked with computers for well over 20 years, nothing does everything :D That's just a simple fact.
You need to decide what your objective is, what tuner and/or program can meet that need, and then begin the learning process. Doing daily driving, racing, and, custom programming, I can tell you the most important input is the driver experience. Because of this, your local tuner can really be an asset to you. You have to remember though, tuning is an interative process. We can get close on a first pass, but fine tuning... that's as much an art as a science. The feedback you can give to the tuner "can" make exponential leaps in performance. Having the electronics, scan tools, and computer programming tools gives you a lot of options to work through very complex computer

I'd say Linux comes damn close, if not allready. :yesnod:
Bill who is actually the programmer/tuner at Speedworks? I was also curious how Speedworks is managing fuel delivery with ls1edit. Are they taking a Volumetric Efficiency approach, or are they modifying the MAF calibrations tables?
Re: Ls1Edit users AND Stve Cole programming. (kewlbrz)

All I want to do is open up the microsoft word and excell files I am sent and play on occasional bout of RTCW. When Linux can do that... ;)
Re: VE vs. MAF tuning. This is a subject of controversy even on OBDI LT1's (the effect the VE tables have in MAF mode). In OBDII LT1 Edit and LS1 operation everything is biased heavily to the MAF side. All load calculations are MAF based - I would be suprised if VE changes were noticable at all.
