Hey everyone, I have a 2002 coupe and I'm going to be installing a G5X3 cam pretty soon. The car has 40k on it and hasn't been raced or abused. I'm trying to decide whether or not to change the timing chain out as it adds a lot more work to the install and then I know ill be buying a better oil pump also...
Has anybody ever had a timing chain break on them? All the write-ups I've read say it's not necessary. Hopefully some of you with this cam or similar setups can chime in.

Thanks in advance!
I guess it depends on what you call "a lot more work". Replacing the timing chain probably adds 10 minutes to the install if you go dot to dot.
I would also look at changing you timing gear as well. 40k I bet your teeth on your gears are getting rounded. Just a suggestion. While you are in there, I would also change your UD if you have not already done so.

You would be NUTs not to change the chain. Up-grade to a LS2 chain. It is a better chain. If your changing the cam,,,,you have to remove the gear and chain. The LS2 chain is a replacement chain for the LS1 chain.
Change it! The newer chain supersedes the original and is a much better chain. Also I’d replace both the sprockets. Chain, part number 12586482 is the replacement and is the same chain used on LS1 through the LS9 now.
When I did my cam, I changed out the chain and gears. It seems CRAZY not to, considering how much work it takes to get to it. I went with a Manley double roller. Don't need a chain this stout for sure, but it sure makes my Y-chromosomes happy. Not quite a bolt in installation, though. Also used a GM Performance Parts Timing Chain Damper. The block was already drilled/tapped for it, so that was easy.
After all this feedback I'll definitely be ordering this chain, I also got a mellings high volume oil pump for the hell of it. I think my existing sprockets will be fine...
btw black98c5 thanks for the great cam! awesome guy to deal with
