Default squeaky shifter

I just noticed my shifter (Stock) has developed a squeak when moving from the center position to the right to access 5th, 6th, and reverse. the sound is coming from the shifter itself, is there something I can grease to make it go away?

It could be coming from the plastic bushing on the bottom of the shift lever.

would some white lithium grease do the trick? do I have to take the shifter out to get to it?

I recently had this also. It would be best to pull the shifter and grease
everything up then re-install. It is not difficult.

there's a little pin on the shifter, I think I read that its to keep something aligned when the shifter is removed? do I have to be worried about getting it back in properly? I have the service manuals, I guess I'll just follow the instructions.

Here is what your going to see when you remove the top plate:

The pin is used to insure that the BOX is in the proper NEUTRAL position when the tranny is in the true NEUTRAL position. You can insert the pin once the tranny is in nuteral and if it wont fit, move the box until it does.

It should fit fine.

Use any snthetic grease or lithium grease. Apply it to the rodm fork and black pivot ball.

Have you ever considered a new shifter?? I LOVE my Kirban!

Stock shifter

Stock vrs KIRBAN

Make sure that you grease the ball on the end and the one inside the housing also:

Take the shifter apart and grease everything that moves, including the plastic cap on the bottom of the shifter lever.

thanks Bill!

I have considered a aftermarket shifter but I haven't found one that I like yet. I want something with a shorter throw than stock but I want one that is a straight shifter and not bent like the Z06 one. I also want something which isn't going to be any stiffer than stock. a C5 is a performance car but mine is also a daily driver, I want it to be easy and comfortable to drive. I've heard alot of good things about the Kirban before...do you think it would be good for me?

There are TWO types of shifters. Ones that are spring assisted to return to center and ones that are not (like the OEM C5 shifter.

The KIRBAN is a spring assisted BUT, to me is not all that stiff. I agree, find one that you can test in a C5 and if you like it, get it!

The only one that I know that is ergonomic and bent to feel good and not spring assisted is the stock C6 shifter. I have to admit, when I drive my wifes C6,,,, I like her stock shifter. Give one of those a try. There everywhere. Stop by a dealer and check out a new C6 with a manual in it.

Bill,

When you tested the stock C6 shifter in your C5, was it as good as the feel of the shifter in a C6Z06?
I had heard that most of the improvement in the feel of the C6 shifter was due to changes within the transmission.
