Default [HELP] Shifter linkage disconnected...I hope

I was leaving a stop light in 1st gear, went to change to second gear and it felt like the gate was blocked. So i wiggled it and pulled down a little harder then heard a "pop" sound come from inside the center console. The shifter felt very loose so as i started moving it around it moved "freely" as if it wasn't connected to anything.

So my question is: Anyone know what might have happened? And what can I do to fix it?

PS. I had a well known tuner install a remote clutch bleeder and a new Tq-Tube. I've only put about 300 miles on the car since i got it back so I'm wondering if they failed to properly connect something....or worse yet damaged something and reinstalled it anyways.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Only one way to find out....pull the console and have a look.

I'm about to do that. But have a feeling it's the actually linkage under the car that runs along the top of the Tq-Tube to the tranny....or worse yet a piece thats inside the tranny.

It could be as simple as the four 1/4-20" bolts that attach the shifter mechanism to the "box" mounted on the torque tube were not torqued down and they came out. Good luck.

stock or after market shifter?
It may be as simple as the set screws have vibrated loose and are preventing the shift....
I have had that happen and it lets me shift into 2/4/6 but not 1/3/5
....

Accessing the shifter only takes a couple of minutes to get too. Open it up and find out.

Heres what your suppose to look like inside:

AFTERMARKET VRS STOCK SHIFTER!! NOTE that the base of the aftermarket shifter is very thick and needs LONGER screws to properly secure it to the box.

My money would be on the bolt at the lower right of this picture.

Nope not the problem. All bolts shown in picture (including lower right bolt) are tight. In fact the rod that the lower right bolt attaches too spins side to side and up and down as the shifter moves.

So it's as I feared....it's gonna be the part that runs along the top of the Tq-Tube into the tranny.

Not sure how I'm gonna check that but I'm going to make the attempt by pulling the exhaust mid-section and the heat sheild and try to inspect it further.

Actually, you only need remove the shifter to tell if that rod has broken in some way.

You won't be able to tell any thing by doing the things that you mentioned. I suggest leaving every in place(other than the exposed shifter), and take by/trailer,etc, back to the person that did the work. I would think that they would take care of the problem. Good luck.

Ok...with a mirror and a flashlight i was able to see where the disconnect is. It's at the clamp point where the shifter rod attaches to the face of the tranny. Looks like the only way thats going to get fixed is by dropping the rear cradle.

I think i'm going to contact the tuner because i'm guessing they failed to properly tighten that clamp.

BTW here's something else this "well known tuner" forgot to do (re-install the exhaust hanger). Why do we pay top dollar to these tuners just to get crappy work.

Some header companies suggest not bolting up to the bell at that position. They should have gave you the clip that bolts up to the bell, in case in the future, you should ever need it.

My vendor stated that it's only used for alignment, and should be removed after installation.

The shift rod is one piece, if you broke it you'll need another one. I have one for sale if you need it. The rod is held in to place by a rolled pin and maybe you sheared it off if you were really banging gears.

Called up "well known tuner" this AM and discussed the issue with them and they are washing their hands of it claiming they never disconnect the shifter rod from the tranny input rod. They instead disconnect the rod at the shifter and slide the tranny and shifter rod as a single unit apart from the Tq-Tube. Sounds kinda fishy to me. Anyone here know if this is a common practice?

Looks like I'm going to be eating a $500+ repair bill....for a freaking tiny *** roll-pin.

How far are you from LG Motorsports? Wylie ? One of the best in the C/5 business. At least give them a call and they may come up with the answer to your problem. Good luck.

I know we do not install the bracket there, especially on track related cars because of cracking issues with the headers at that point. On the C6 we eliminated the bracket completely and will do so on the next change to the C5 units as well.
