Default Help--vibration through stick shift--any ideas?

I think I got transmission or some related problem.

I now feel a vibration coming through my stick shift, mainly when I have the clutch pressed in. I also heard some banging coming from underneath the car. Any ideas what the problem could be?

Thanks.

Probably TT. When bearings/bushings get excessive wear, it does create a lot of noise.

When was the last time you ran some injector cleaner like Techron? Idle instability could be the issue.

Rattle in the shifter could be just the 4 bolts that hold the shifter in place vibrating loose.

I had this problem a little while ago, and it continued to get worse and rattle. Turns out that the harmonic balancer on the engine was falling apart. Quick and easy to check, just get a flash light and look for wobble.

Default Vibrating shifter - how to tighten?

RWS, would you be able to share with me how to get access to the four shifter bolts? I have a similar problem in my 2001 C5, vibrations in the stock shifter upon strong acceleration, mainly in fourth and fifth gear. What do I need to remove to get access to the bolts?
Cheers
Jason

You're a relatively new member here post wise, so please take this as it's intended.

It is against the forum rules (main menu page towards the bottom) to bring up old threads of more than 45 days old. The moderators will lock up the threads that are dredged up.

Plus most members won't come back to answer an old thread like this.

Here's a lesson in how to find past technical threads for yourself in the future. Any technical topic ever asked/answered can be found in C5 Tech. Use search or search this forum (in the red banner). The trick is in the keywords.

In this case, use "c6 shifter install" or similar and you should find literally hundreds of past threads, many with images and tutorials on how to R&R the console surround to access your shifter. I'll give you the link that is most often referenced.

http://temp.corvetteforum.net/c5/pat...rInstall.shtml

Now, once you've done that procedure, you might also want to consider the "shifter alignment procedure". Use those keywords in C5 Tech as I described above. You should find numerous past threads on that procedure as well.

While you have the console surround apart, you should check the rubber bushings that secure the "box" above the torque tube. They're known to deteriorate with age.

If you have more questions, start a new thread detailing the symptoms you're experiencing.

Search is your friend. However, you may not find this in the C5 section as this was discussed in the C6 tech section. The bushings on the shifter box eventully fail because of the flash from casting and eventually wear out the rubber bushings. This kit has a fix for all of that:

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-t...shing-kit.html

It is worth checking in to while you have your shifter out.

Hotwheels57, thanks for your feedback, and I appreciate the openness...will take care to follow the rules moving forward.

Thanks to both of you and Jack for the advice, will give this a whirl.
