Default Very high oil pressure problem.

Well normally my oil pressure gauge reads in the middle.(around 40psi or so) Well today I was about 45 minutes away from my house when I realized that my gauge was sitting at 80psi(max) and when I clicked on the DIC it showed I was at 130psi which im preety sure thats the max that will show on the DIC. No check engine light though. Thing was the car is running fine, i dont smell burning oil, A buddy of mine told me that if it has too much oil pressure it will leak either out of the Head gasket or through the water jets. So i checked my gasket. No oil. And i checked my coolant. No oil. So I dont know if its just an electronic mess up or what, Im scared to drive the car, I dont know what will happen with to MUCH oil pressure.

Any ideas?

Car is a 2000 m6 with minor boltons.

More than likely your oil pressure sending unit is out. there is a sticky under oil pressure sender relocate at the top of the tech section. Heres the link http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...-relocate.html. It happens all the time and a easy fix. Get a new oil pressure sending unit from advance and make sure its the one with brass fitting not the aluminum one.

lol 8vette7 beat me to it.

You must not visit this forum often as you would have seen the gazillion posts/threads in here about the failing oil pressure senders. Do yourself a favor and make sure when you buy a new one, that it is a "brass" one and not the aluminum ones, otherwise you'll be doing the job again in a day or two.

common problem... seems to spread like the H1N1 virus... my '99s got that problem at the moment. I've got the parts just waiting for some crappy weather to pull the intake.

It makes no difference if the sensor is brass or aluminum, what does matter is how you torque the sensor. Do not over torque it. Make sure when you are torquing it that the socket is straight. 11 to 15 lbs ft, and better to be on the lower side of the torque value.

sending unit is toast and "pulling" the meter high or there is a very off chance of a dash issue but usually when that happens the gauge go low

To check that it is the sensor, turn the car on, but do not start it (engine off), if you read ANY oil pressure, the sensor (or very unlikely the wiring) is bad. There should be no oil pressure with the engine off.

It is okay to drive like this, but watch your oil level and watch for leaks. The sensor sometimes starts leaking when it goes bad. Your low oil level warning will come on when it is a quart low.

Also when replacing, make sure the connector is free of any oil. I agree torque is important.

Get the relocation kit from Jeff @ TPE. The kit is only $80 which includes the sensor. Plus you get a warranty to cover the crappy GM sensor design
