Default NHTSA.gov fuel leaks UPDATE 01/09/10 PLEASE READ LAST POST

everyone that has fuel leak problem, fuel vapor smell, leaks on the fuel system dealing with the crossover or tanks, or anyone that has had this already fixed, please send a complaint to (NHTSA.gov).

I didnt know about this until yesterday, and filled out the complaint. You will need your vin number.

This is a faulty system designed by GM and they should be held accountable for it.

Crossover tube between the two tanks. Seals and tube are leaking, and
there are a lot of C5's doing this.

Mainly the 2004 models and it takes a fuel tank replacment to repair. Some have cracked tanks and some have a crossover pipe seal issue that takes a tank replacement to fix.this is both a safety and an emmission law issue!

It seems some late production 2003's also may have this problem.

What you are saying is VERY true. Unfortunately however, unless there have been documented injuries or deaths that were caused by this defect, nothing will be done by the NHTSA or GM to correct it.

Many of us have followed the same dead ended trail seeking replacements for our cracked thin spoke wheels.

if there is a MAJOR flaw in the vehicle (fuel system) and it is widespread it becomes a matter of mustering the necessary resources against GM. This is how class action lawsuits handle these matters. There has to be a real not an imaginary issue. It is a Uniform Commercial Code matter where a product enters the stream of commerce with a defect that was there when it left the factory. You do not have to have personal injury or proprerty damage to bring an action.

Then it becomes a matter of how large a class can be mustered to bring this action. That is usually the weak link in bringing these types of actions. Normal aging is not covered. What is the life expectancy for the parts that are failing. Nothing lasts forever.

If GM is notified of a fuel leak issue and it is widespread without them taking any action they have a huge problem. It is like pulling the pin on a handgrenade and continue to hold the grenade. It would put them into a situation where punitive damages could be sought. Ford Motor Company ignored the issue with their Pinto and its gas tank issue. It cost them dearly too.

You are incorrect (ignorant). There is a Consumer Protection Agency which brings a lot of actions against companies. It is Federal too. Your comments seemed biased against (federal) government which is a popular approach.

your response is an emotional one. fortunately I have dealt with these issues on a professional basis. some people are experienced and educated and some are not. ignorance is bliss . think with your brain not your emotions

I got a call from the NHTSA today, another member also got a call. They are very interested and want pictures and parts for their lab. Seems there is an agency that will help. This is also an evaporative emmission issue which carries a 80,000 mile warranty!

Default What about fuel filter leaks ?

A lot of us, me included have had the fuel filter leaking. Isn't this an issue ? I realize that this is easily and relatively cheap to fix, but it leaks very close to the exhaust pipe and is also an emissions problem.

Fuel lines under pressure I dont think are covered under emmission laws(though they should be) but it should be a safety issue for sure.

I am thinking since a fuel filter is a maintainence item that it would not be covered.

TTT
UPDATE
Recvd. call from Nathan@ NHTSA. He only shows 4-5 reports on the books for this problem. He stated that this could come to a head very quickly if everyone that has this problem would report to him.

He stated that even if you have had the leak fixed by paying or Warranty, to send in this complaint. For those that have paid to get it fixed, they are making sure that you are returned your money that you paid.

Everyone needs to take the time to file this complaint.
