Default How much does the diff weigh?

I'm changing out the output shafts, and am mulling over how best to pull the differential. If I lower the driveline at the rear and pull the diff straight off, am I in for a big surprise? I have a rig I built to remove the entire driveline, but I'd like to avoid that if possible.

Shipping weight for the rear diff is about 75lbs as I remember.

There's plenty of previous info on how to do this proceedure. Use the "search" button in the tech section. You're main concern an regarding weight is lowering and removing the rear cradle. Once this is done and diff fluid is removed, you'll be able to pull the diff by hand, no problem. Ask me how I know. Good luck.

bumble-z, the cradle is long gone, so no concern there. You're telling me that when i slide the diff of the transmission shaft, its NOT going to crush my head like a pumpkin? Could you give me an edumacated guess of its weight?

Just came from my garage. The old shipping container that my Racing H/D 3:90 diff came in last Dec weighed 83 lbbs. I'd say w/ all the cushing cardboard , H/D plastic shipping container and new bottles of Red line fluids & additives, weighed at least 10 lbs by themself! So I'd think that rear diff weighs arond 68- 70 lbs max. I used the handy H/Freight 450 lb., capacity trans jack (scissor) part # 39178 lifts from 7 1/4" -23 `1/4" You can raise and lower by using a 1/2" drive rachet or like I did with my i/2" impact. The top of the jack can be angled, which is nice for this job. And it's real light too!. Check it out. In fact my old 3:43 diff is still resting on it. Have fun, lol.

Enough to crush my fingers. Was helping EG do mine and I though I could support it. I am not weak so it surprised me. Not that big but 75-80 lbs seems about right.

Remember not to lower the torque tube to far or you will impact the fire wall with the engine.
