Lately my curise control has been disengaging on its own. Does not happen often, but will be going down the interstate on curise and all of a sudden it will disconnect. The other day it did it twice in 20 miles.

What should I look for? Car is an '04 automatic.

Active Handling activation will cut it off. Many things can cause an activation I.E road surface, new tires, alignment ect. Let alone a mechanical issue......
It is most likely the brake switch. either defective or misadjusted.
I was thinking that as the brakes wear, the pedel would get lower, and then could it activate the disconnect switch. Maybe I need a brake job to fix the cruise control?

The brakes are hydraulically adjusted so the peddle travel should stay the same.. Also, it's spring loaded to return to the stop...
The Active Handling system can activate for a number of reasons. Some justified and some NOT. DTC codes can also help point to the problem.
The next time it kicks out, look at the DIC and note the message. If it says Active Handling Active,,,thats an issue.
Normally, the switch on the Brake Peddle gets out of adjustment and gets too sensitive. Any little bump or vibrations can trip it and shut down active handling.

good advice.
I just wanted to add the reason my CC was kicking out. The Steering Wheel Position Sensor was going bad and would randomly trigger Active Handling events that disengaged the CC.

Good Luck in the hunt.
Even in a normally functioning C5, if you jerk the steering wheel the cruise control will go off.
I was having the same cruise disengaging problem with my '01. Seemed very random - some days it would work fine. I checked all the grounds and sensor connections, SWPS, yaw, etc, nothing seemed to help. I was having a slow leak in my left rear tire - about 1 psi a day. I noticed that when the the pressure differential between the left front and left rear was more than 3 or 4 psi the cruise would disengage and also the left front brake would come on for a split second. Must be enough diameter change to trigger the AHS. I now check the tire pressures every day and keep them as close to 30 PSI cold as possible. Crusie is now working fine.
There are 2 ways that the ECM will release or unlock the converter
1st --and reported MISFIRE--whether real or fasle will unlock the TCC
2nd---Any tap on the brake pedal or short circuit on the brake switch will unlock the TCC
I've seen simply the floormats cause this before-
Many modded engines create false misfires--just the nature of the beast-the only way to eliminate the false misfires is to disable or desensitize them in your tune
Check the PROPER operation of the BRAKE & CLUTCH micro switch adjustments!! If there wrong,, it will affect cruise control operation.. Both switches should be fully compressed and CLOSED for proper operation. When the brake or clutch is depressed, it should disengage cruise.
