Default Damaged Air Filter Question

I have an old Halltec Tric on my 1999 coupe. The Tric was originally provided with a "wedge" air filter.

Mine must have been pretty beat up at some point one of the shops I utilize found the pne pictured and installed.

I am wondering if the chewed up flange and the split on the top (as seen in the pic) are causing my system any issues?

I just saw the condition of this thing and it must have been on now for a while. Am I asking for trouble leaving this on?

Thanks for any guidance/suggestions.

Looks to me like that would cause an air flow issue with that split on the filiter, I dont think the flange would cause a huge problem because the MAF would go in the flange and then clamp down.

Thanks for your reply. I doubt it's causing an air flow issue since it is located way before the MAF but I could be wrong and I guess it could allow unfiltered air into the mix.

WIth the TRIC there is an S shaped aluminum piece that sits between the MAF and the filter and snakes through a hole made in the radiator shroud.

Thanks again for your ideas!

Take a Tube of silicone and slather it all over the crack--than take a roll of Duct Tape and wrap it--no more air leak!

If you pull or push on the split area, does it open up to the inside? If it does, it may not be sealing, even after the clamp is tightened. I would trash it if it were mine. In the meantime, some 3M gasket adhesive could bond the split areas together.

If you plan to continue using that air intake assembly and decide you want a new filter, contact S&B FILTERS (CA).

They do/did make the filters for HALLTECH. The also supply the filters for other manufacturers, including the oil/cleaning kits. Their oil/cleaning kits offer two colors of oil depending on the color of the filter media.

They can make you a custom filter to your specs, including media color, rubber end caps, colored end caps, or chrome end caps. If you send them your damaged filter, they'd probably be able to identify the specific specs in their database.

The turn around time is quick, the cost isn't much more (if that) than buying one off the shelf if it's still even available from HALLTECH.
