I just bought my first c5- a 2002 Z06 with 17,000 miles. When I first start it up the lifters are loud for a period of time then quiet down a bit, but always seem to hear them is this normal?
Also as the engine gets warmer I have a bearing noise (drives me crazy -everyone asking what's wrong w/ it). I thought maybe the belt tensioner, but that feels good and spins fine without and noise? I pulled the belt off and that did take the noise away....(also have a new dealer installed belt) I do have some movement in another tensioner- The one on the drivers side of the harmonic balancer (not sure the correct name for the part) but the belt goes up over and down around it looks like a tensioner, but does not move back & forth. Would really appreciate some help. Thanks!
If these noises are severe you had better get it into a qualified technician to be checked out. Continuing to drive it may cost you much more to repair in the long run.

.....plus 10. It's hard to diagnose noise sight unseen. Get it to a shop asap.
Are you sure its lifter noise and not piston slap?
IIRC GM in the owners manual at 100k says to check or replace them (lifters) so at 88k your getting close to that mark obviously.
The bearing noise ( squeal I'm guessing) could still be the tensioner, just needs a load n it to produce the noise is why you don't hear it when you turn it by hand maybe.
Thank you that was very helpfull, I book marked it
I have a different owners manual though and am looking for it so I ( can see what it really said :jest:
Thanks for your suggestions-took the vette to our local corvette guy who stated engine is fine... has piston slap when first statred up and last for about 2-3 minutes or until warmed up awhile and then will go away. Also, was told that I need an upper belt tensioner pulley and a new belt ( I wouldn't think after 17,000 miles) that this would be the case, but I will roll with it as from what tech is saying these are common issues on a LS6.

Interesting that you said you "just bought it," and no one said to take it back to where you got it and have it checked out. Private sale?
As for the tensioner, I had one go bad on my 1500 Chevy pickup at 13,700 miles. The whole thing shattered doing 5mph in a parking lot -- instantly lost all power steering, brakes, and coasted into a parking space. Scary since 5 minutes earlier I was doing 70mph on an interstate.....
Ok did some checking through my manuals and could not find it so I must have been dyslexic or something and misread that you should swap them out if your going to a new cam... Although I can swear I read it in a repair manual, sorry guys wasnt the service manual didnt mean to lead anyone astray.
I just have to shake my head at some of this input...
to the op, If youtook the drive belt off and the noise stopped then its one of the component of the drive belt system, my guts says its the idler pulley of the Belt drive system but then hey what do I know...
Piston slap.. the motors have been tested to 200,000 miles,,I have a few guys who keep in tough with me via PK with over 300,000 miles, motos have never been opened..
As Ive said in other posts and threads... not following the OLM, or changing every year , which ever comes first will cause bearing wear both rods and mains.. it will also cause premature wrist pin damage which causes piston slap.. so make sure you change your oil and use the GM spec oil.. because it has the precises addative package for the dynamics of this engine. If you or your grandfather knows more about this care than we do , then you deserve what you get....

Ok......can you tell me ANY production GM V8 engine made for a passenger car or light truck in the last 20 years, that requires the lifters be changed at 100K miles?
I'm just wondering, because you must have read it somewhere, and frankly, I've never heard it before(freely admitting that just because I don't know about it, doesn't mean it's not true).

I don't know about the rest of you, but this would probably be a dealbreaker for me!

Yes, it was a private owner....I will replace the tensioner and go from there!

Thanks,
I'm inclined to think I was doing a few things at once and mixed it up at this point so I'll say I did not recall correctly. It happens from time to time.
** Found it***** IT was from a mech on a european Car performance site..LOL I was doing a few things at once and jumbled it all together ..Sorry for the confusion. been crazy here for a few weeks.
" Actually, you should replace lifters every 100,000 miles...it's a good way to keep the engine happy."
Ooooh I was waiting for it! Yes, I put dino-fluid in the tranny too.
It's not that uncommon really. ATF is full of detergent.
Taken from one manufacturers website..others contain similar info:
Myth #12
Adding a quart of ATF the day before an oil change will clean your engine. ATF added to the motor oil will clean the engine due to the high levels of detergent in ATF.
Fact
ATF does not contain detergent chemistry. ATF does contain dispersants, which have properties similar to detergents. But ATF is not formulated to withstand the combustion environment inside the engine. We recommend that you keep the fluids where they belong: motor oil in the crankcase, and automatic transmission fluid in the transmission.
