Default Another Head cam swap build thread

Alright i know how much everyone enjoys reading through these so I thought i would contribute my own. A little background for ya I purchased my Vette about a year and a half ago I did a baseline dyno of 320 and 328 not to bad, got called away to do my military dutied I have since returned from my Navy duties in the far off land of Maine. It is time to modify my 99 and change things up.

heres what i got coming my way so far

Everything i have gotten came from Texas Speed, Really great bunch of guys to deal with. I bought some 1 3/4 Long tubes with a catted xpipe from xs power, went to Texas Speed and bought a heads and cam kit from them consisting of the PRC Stg2 LS6 heads and a 228/232 114+4 cam,FAST 78mm intake, mti 25% UD pully, melling hi flow oil pump, ls2 timing set already have a vararam CAI, LS6 intake, and z06 ti catback. then got some bilstien sport shocks . powerwise i have been told i should be around 400-410 to the wheel after tuning. (which will be done by Ryne at CMS)

Please chime in and let me know what you think, and offer wisdom as i progress i will update with Pics

The reality of making great power is that the clutch will likely get too hot and basically stick to the floor. Get spec stg 3/replace slave and master while you have it apart. Then you can hot lap all day and it will keep coming back for more!

When swapping out for a better clutch do i have to replace the flywheel too or can i just keep the stock one in there? will this affect drivability at all?

When replacing a camshaft, you have to pull the pulley anyway... I dont understand the posters comment on NOT going with an underdrive pulley.

The clutch in these cars are not really good for spirited driving with high hp. But it's not the clutch, it's the hydraulics that really are weak. There is very little fluid in the system and it gets hot enough to be ineffective at actuating the slave cylinder.

It's very likely that you wont stop modifying your car, but I would not replace the clutch until you start having problems...

You can use your stock flywheel with some aftermarket clutches, but not all of them.

Have fun with your new found power, and thanks for serving...

I have been busy spending money! got some 1 3/4 Long tubes with a catted xpipe from xspower, went to Texas Speed and bought a heads and cam kit from them consisting of the PRC Stg2 LS6 heads and a 228/232 114+4 cam powerbond pully, melling oil pump, ls2 timing set. then got some bilstien sport shocks (Rather than getting the Z06 rear brake ducts). powerwise i have been told i should be around 400-410 to the wheel after tuning.

Should my next upgrade be Brakes (AC DELCO PERFORMANCE ROTORS AND HAWK HPS PADS) or A Clutch Like the LS7 clutch?

Please chime in and let me know what you think as i progress i will update with Pics

My guess is you'll make about 420rwhp after tuning. You should get a Spec 1 or 2+ clutch

You are very welcome!!!

I always say i have a goal for power but once i get there I will make a new one im sure LOL. If i did reuse the stock flywheel do i need to get it resurfaced first? so i should look into upgrading the master cylinder and the slave cylinder. thanks for the info

Thanks for being optimistic for me lol. i have been looking at the spec clutches if i got one i would just get the clutch kit i don't really need a flywheel.

Sounds like a fun build! You will be happy with this set-up for a while, then your new hp goals will come into affect. lol I agree with everything you are doing to the car and also think you should be closer to the 425 whp myself. Post pics and vids when you are able.

Why +4 on the cam? Are the heads big enough that you are concerned about low rpm torque? I'm asking because I have a slightly bigger cam with 114 +2 and am still running stock heads. It's an A4 and I'm looking for a new tc. I have a set of LS2 heads I was going to have ported and put on but am concerned this will drop my low rpm torque enough to mess with the tc I want (I like them to stall lower and tighter. I'm not about top end HP. I want it available lower in the rpm band and responsive). So just curious.

Other than that sounds like a nice build. The car should be fun to drive. Keep us posted.

i just did my testing so im good for a couple of years, i am military so i have the option of regestering my car in my home state of Colorado which has no emmisions testing. so i will be good. but i might be able to keep in clean enough for california sniffer.

you might want to add the Comp Cams Trunion up-grade to the rockers and what are you going to do about injectors?

Injectors are 42s yes the trunion upgrade would be something else to think about.
