Default Spark rattle @ wot

I'm getting spark rattle under wot accelleration at higher rpms. The car is stock to my knowledge, I bought it used; 2001 6spd 36,000mi, seems well cared for, runs nice with normal temps. I did the zip tie air filt mod with a K&N filter and a motor oil & filter change. Is it typical for these motors to have audible detonation as I have described...what should I be looking at? thanks

What fuel are you running? Have you put Techron through the fuel system?

I use Shell or Chevron, premium grade. I have run alot of Techron additive trying to cure a troublesome fuel gauge.

Have you checked for any codes from the drivers information center? If you don't know how to pull the codes click on this link by Bill Curlee.

I had the exact same problem. Take the car to a GOOD tuner. Mine was running lean at WOT. He did a street tune is what the shop called it and the car runs fine. I also put in a 180 degree thermostat and the tuner reset the fans to come on sooner. The car runs 10 degrees cooler.

Depending on how it was driven in the past and if it comsumes oil thru the PCV system, you may have a cylinder carbon problem.

Running Chevron Techron Plus in the tank and running a high tier fuel like SHELL Fuel will eventually eliminate the carbon but you can expidite the process by running SEAFOAM thru the intake using the PCV vacuum fitting. I run the RPM up to about 1500. When it's being sucked in thru the vacuum port have someone shut the engine off while its being sucked into the manifold. Allow the seafoam to continue to be drawn into the manifold as the engine is coasting to a stop. If you do ti correctly you will only use about 1/3 of the container. Theres no need to use the entire can.

That will allow raw seafoam to sit in the cylinders and dislove the carbon.

Let it sit over night or a few hours and when you crank it up, it will somke quite a bit and then clear up. That's it.
