ok so i was shifting from 1st to 2nd as soon as i hit second bang grindddddddd bang bang ect... first thought was damn... there goes a trans... opened my door to listen, its coming from the torque tube, my guess is busted drive shaft, coupling? what do you guys think?
ahh yes its fine right up till i let out on the clutch, as soon as it begins to engage is when the bang bang pop happens

...or something in the rear-end, maybe? doesn't sound good either way, but good luck to you. let us know what it was once you get inside and find the problem...
ahhh ****... well im crossing my fingers for it to just be the couplers, tranny and rear end are pretty expensive fixes and my moneys been wrapped up in my LS2 miata latley :/
if it is just a broken coupler what are the chances that i can just swap for a new one and all is well? ive only got about 430rwhp so i hope it would take more than that to destroy a tranny mainshaft, especially an RPM stage 4 trans..
oh, does anyone know of a good walk through for trans/ TT removal? i do not have a manual... am a mechanic... however do like doing my homework before i dive into something
so ive read about couplings going bad and getting replaced because they got sloppy... has anyone actually broken one to the point where the vehicle will no move? someone said "bolt in dryer sound" and thats exactley what it sounds like coming from the front of the TT near the bell housing, from what ive seen thats where the front coupling is?
it could break completely. i've seen them pretty messed up in pictures before and they are designed to fail so your torque tube itself does not. think of how often a u joint lets go before an actual driveshaft...
the car has been sitting for the past 7 months since ive been on deployment... returned today at noon (ok well yesterday) so im guessing the "tough love" i gave to them before i left along with all that down time might have caused dry rot? i wasent having any noticable vibrations but then again i run straight pipes so rough is normal lol . you guys have noooo clue how much im hoping its just a simple rubber coupling! ill start taking her apart tomorrow. and if thats what it is hopefully ill have he back on the road before i start my post deployment leave on the 18th!

I can understand you wanting it to be something simple. Have you looked at the two output shafts?
Will it make the noise if the trans if in netrual with the clutch out (engaged)? If yes, this would indicate propshaft or couplings. If there is no noise in netrual than it could be the trans to diff shaft or one of the two output shafts.
Hope you sneek by with a low cost fix. Let us know what you find.
Another possibility is that you just blew out the center of the clutch disk.

Almost 0% chance....
The torque tube shaft has centering pins on each end so it won't "fall out" if a coupler get worn. The coupler mounting user over-lapping bolts. In other words, the bolts from the one part of the shaft overlap the bolts from the other part. So, the end result os that hard parts of the shaft assembly must fail before the car would not drive due to a coupler issue. The only way it could fail and be an easy fix is if you just happened to break off the bolts without damaging anything else. Most likely, at least one of the ears a bolt goes through would blow out too.
ok so i got the drivetrain out, the torque tube is deffinatley the issue trans and diff are in great shape! the output shaft of the torque tube was jiggling around as soon as i pulled it, i had to stop early last night but i am going to break down the tq tube here in a little bit to check out the damage, worst comes to worst i guess ill need a new propshaft, bearings and couplers?? i can live with that i suppose...
