Default Comp Cam

Anyone using the the Comp Cam XFI™ XE-R, XER273HR (224/230 .581/.588 114)?

What were your supporting mods (heads, intake, headers)?

With the other mods and a tune what were the results (rwhp/rwtq) and was it street friendly in the sense of idle, lope, surging, etc.?

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'm happy

Bought setup from a forum member...he went 10.974 with it...I haven't gotten that low yet...but I'm not as much as a drag racer as he is!

My recent build used a Comp Cam X-ER lobes 224/230 .585/.595 113. I also added new stock 243 heads, dual springs, LS2 timing chain and a hi-vloume oil pump, etc.

Makes great power. 416 rwhp/392 rwtq on a loaded Mustang dyno. It is my DD. Idle park=900 Idle gear=750 Nice lope at idle. It's like music to my ears. The car shakes you a little at idle too.

If you do that cam just use a good behive spring package installed correctly and a stiff set of pushrods. No need to lose HP by running dual springs on that cam. The Pac 1218's or 1518's would be work very well.

So would this cam (the 224/230 .581/.588 114) in combination with AFR 205 heads (62cc), LS6 Intake, LS6 throttle body and MAF, XS Power 1 3/4 headers and X pipe, Ti exhaust and a dual cone CAI through a Vararam power duct be in the 420rwhp neighborhood? This is on a well maintained LS1 (60,000 miles) in a 2000 coupe 6speed with a 3:90 rear. Would the LS2 timing chain or an aftermarket, and a different oil pump be required? Would I have to change the injectors to something larger as well?

if you go with the AFR 205 heads milled to 62cc ( which is .020 off ), you'll make you goal of 420 RWHP and have a very nice street mild running car.

Its clode to my set up before my FAST 90/90 and I put down 425 RWHP.

Its very easy on the street, and lots of fun when you put your foot down.

No you wont be in the 10's

If you're going to buy AFR heads go ahead and get the 225's as they're nothinmg more than a ported 243 with a thick deck. If you don't already have the headers get the 1 7/8 " which will help in your power goals. I would use a Pro Gears timing set because they are very strong and about the most accurate timing set i've used. I would also replace the stock oil pump with a Melling oil pump. At 60K miles there's no good reason not to change the oil pump. Your stock injectors will be pretty much maxed out with those mods.

Not in the 10s!?....of course I will, my stop watch has a 2 second delay.

A little confused on the comments regarding the heads. Are you saying the 205's are just nothing more than ported 243's and get the 225's as they would be an upgrade in comparison? Already have the headers, so how much hp am I leaving on the table by not going 1 7/8? Regarding injectors, will 30LB give me adequate flow with room to grow, or would they be to much or to little for the mods comtemplated. Thanks for the info on the timing gears and oil pump. If budget were an issue would the LS2 timing gears suffice?

Their web site says it will, but recommends these heads for more radical mods. They imply that it may, on a stock 346ci or mildly modded LS1, lose some low end torque but increase high end hp. They also say it is intended more for a 396-427 cubic inch engine.

I was at a shop before the summer and someone had 224 with the AFR225 heads. It was in a camaro and it didnt break 400 RWHP. My personnal opinion was it was to much heads for such a small cam.

205's are what you'd want for your application

The AFR 225s fit on a stock LS1/LS6 and they're not going to be to much head. IMO the 205's are to small unless you have them ported and then you might as well buy the 225's.

If I were going to buy an off the shelf set of heads it would be the TFS's.

you can run 10's on this cam with supporting mods in good air on a well prepared track through an auto. 10.997 , 10.998, and 10.974 dec5 08da-700 at atco nj setup ported 90/90, texas speed ls-6 2.5 heads, kooks 1 3/4 hig flow cats, vig3600 with 3.73's, xer-273 .582/.594 114+2, mt dr's , corsa pace car catback, heads unmilled with gm stock gasket, top speed was 126.66. work and tuning by amr. idle okay a little bit of a motorboat sound
ing side once it warms up

I have TSP 5.3 stage 2.5 with a 228/228 588/588 cam running 36lb injectors. I talked to the guys at TSP and they said some guys were fine with stock injectors and some guys were running out of duty cycle on thier stock injectors. I opted for the bigger injectors because I didn't want to do a tune twice.

I like the numbers the FAST manifolds are getting, but really pissed off about how much they are asking for that setup.

TSP was working on a set of LS3 heads to work on a 346 ci engine. That would allow the use of an L76 manifold which runs about $400 versus a FAST at $900.

Besides cost savings, WHY?

I was under the impression the LS3 heads have just too big of a chamber and the L76 manifold and tb are just about useless.

243 heads and stock LS6 manifold and tb would still be a better choice for a 346 LS1/LS6 block.

I would rather have that on a 346ci than the LS3 stuff.

The LS3 heads flow big. If you want to make use of the flow numbers they produce, you need to run a big cam. It comes stock on a 6.2 liter engine which is not a whole lot bigger than a 5.7, but this is all a moot point if they head is not available for an engine with less than a 4 inch bore. It's almost cheaper to just get a bigger bore engine to take advantage of the price and flow of the LS3 head with L-76 manifold. I keep eyeing that 418 short block from TSP.

then why do some builders take off the LS3 / L-76 and put 243 heads and a FAST 92/92 or the 243 and LS6 intake on the LS3 block ?

Thanks guys for the info and insight. It looks like the Comp Cam I referenced will do what I am aiming to accomplish. As far as the heads go I will probably just have a set of 243's ported. Please feel free to continue to use the thread to debate the different head configurations and application to the LS1 5.7, interesting stuff.
