Default Need harmonic balancer? How do you know?

My mechanic informs he that I may need the harmonic balancer replaced...how can I tell he's right? He replaced the belts and water pump along with new radiator and he could have done it then but he didn't. Anyway, any advice? Thanks.

the balancer will wobble. the steering rack will need to be removed to be able to get the bolt out.

The outer dampening /drive ring will either wobble OR it can slip on the rubber elastomeric seal between the ring and inner hub and it will male noises.

Examine the outer ring at idle and see if its wobbling or riding off the hub. The outer ring can come loose and ride against the timing chain cover (damaging it) or ride against the rack (damaging it)

Another symptom is premature belt damage or a serpintne belt that rides off the dampener drive pulley.

Hey BC,

Where did you get your powerbond balancer? did you get stock diameter or UD?

Thanks,

25% underdrive and I ordered all my mod stuff thru ENGLANDGREEN. He shipped it all together in one great big box. It was like CHRISTMAS in October!

lol, sweet man. dang, I dont' want to go with 25 percent underdriven. Do you have a stock stereo in your car?

have you noticed any drawbacks whatsoever with the under driven accessories? I just don't want to over work the PS pump/AC comp/alternator for 5-15 HP.

Yep,,,, I have a STOCK Bose unit. I have ZERO issues with my car with the 25% underdrive even with a stout cam. My idle is 900 rpm due to the cam and like I stated, No charging, PS or AC issues.

I believe that they offer a standard drive unit now.

I'm pretty sure you're right (about the standard size), I'm just having a hard time finding someone who stocks the oem diameter ones. 10 percent UD should be fine for me and I'll do 25 percent if I find one cheap enough

I figured it was time for a new Powerbond 10% UD pulley when...

I decided it was time to do the H/C.
